WhatsApp has introduced a new bill payment feature in India, allowing users to find, manage and pay their everyday household and utility bills directly within the app. The company announced the feature on September 3, saying it will be rolled out gradually across the country.

The service will be available to Android and iOS users in the coming weeks. With the launch, WhatsApp is expanding the range of financial services available on its platform and giving users another way to handle routine payments without leaving the app.

Bill payments come to WhatsApp

The new feature is powered by the Bharat Connect network and gives users access to around 22,722 billers across 30 categories.

These categories include electricity, gas, water, FASTag, insurance, credit card payments and loan repayments. The broad selection is intended to allow users to manage different types of household and financial bills through a single platform.

Users will also be able to manage multiple accounts under the same service provider. This could be useful for people who have more than one account or bill associated with a particular provider.

A new way to manage upcoming bills

Users can access the bill payment service by tapping the ₹ icon at the top of the WhatsApp home screen. The section will allow them to make payments as well as view previous transactions and upcoming bills.

WhatsApp is also giving users a choice of payment methods. Bills can be paid using UPI, credit cards or debit cards, depending on the user’s preferred option.

The feature brings bill management and payments into the same app that millions of Indians already use every day for messaging, business communication and other digital services.

WhatsApp expands its payments push

The bill payment launch comes as WhatsApp continues to expand its financial services in India. Its payment service, WhatsApp Pay, has also recorded growing transaction volumes in the country.

In June 2026, WhatsApp Pay processed 150 million UPI transactions, compared with 37 million transactions in June 2024. Its share of UPI transaction volume also increased to around 0.7 percent from 0.27 percent during the same period.

The growth helped WhatsApp overtake CRED to become the eighth-largest UPI app in India by transaction volume in June.

India remains a key market

India is WhatsApp’s biggest market, with more than 600 million users. The platform’s large user base gives its new bill payment service significant reach as the company gradually expands access.

The company has been adding more services to WhatsApp in India, allowing users to carry out tasks beyond traditional messaging. The latest bill payment feature further strengthens that approach by bringing several routine financial payments into one place.

As the rollout continues over the coming weeks, Android and iOS users across India will gradually gain access to the service. Once available, users will be able to search for supported billers, manage their accounts, check bill details and complete payments directly through WhatsApp.
