Artificial intelligence startup Wonderful is preparing for a major expansion after raising $550 million in Series C funding at a $5 billion valuation, with the company aiming to grow its workforce from about 650 employees to 1,000.

Founded only last year, Wonderful works with large enterprises to help them deploy artificial intelligence. The fresh capital is expected to support a worldwide hiring push as the startup expands its forward-deployed engineering teams across international markets.

The planned expansion would add roughly 350 people to Wonderful’s existing workforce, a significant increase for a company that has reached its current scale in a relatively short period.

Insight Partners, an existing investor in Wonderful, led the Series C round and contributed $150 million. Salesforce joined the financing as the only new investor, while the rest of the capital came from previous backers.

Those returning investors include Index Ventures, IVP, Vine Ventures, 9Yards and Bessemer Venture Partners.

Hiring becomes the next priority

Wonderful’s fundraising is closely tied to its plans to build a larger global team rather than simply adding another high-profile financing round to the crowded AI sector.

The company already employs around 650 people and is expanding its forward-deployed engineering operations around the world. Its plan to reach a workforce of 1,000 means hiring approximately 350 additional employees if the target is completed.

That expansion is particularly notable given Wonderful’s age. The company was founded only last year, yet has already assembled a workforce numbering in the hundreds while attracting backing from several established venture investors.

Wonderful is led by co-founder and Chief Executive Officer Bar Winkler and co-founder and Chief Technology Officer Roey Lalazar.

Salesforce is the only new name in the round

Another distinctive feature of the Series C is the composition of its investor group.

Rather than bringing in a broad slate of new financiers, Wonderful raised most of the round from investors that had already backed the company. Salesforce was the sole new investor disclosed in the transaction, while Insight Partners returned to lead the financing with its $150 million commitment.

The participation of Index Ventures, IVP, Vine Ventures, 9Yards and Bessemer Venture Partners further extends the involvement of Wonderful’s existing investor base.

With $550 million of new capital secured, Wonderful’s immediate challenge now shifts from fundraising to execution. Its stated expansion plan puts workforce growth at the centre of the next phase, with the company moving toward a 1,000-person organisation while continuing to build out its engineering presence globally.
