Reliance Industries and Rolls-Royce have announced a strategic partnership to explore the design, development, manufacturing and delivery of a sovereign indigenous combat engine for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. The announcement was made on August 14, 2026, ahead of Independence Day, highlighting the companies’ intent to support India’s push for greater self-reliance in critical defence technologies.

The proposed partnership would bring together Rolls-Royce’s expertise in advanced propulsion with Reliance’s industrial and manufacturing capabilities. The two companies will also explore setting up a dedicated Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India.

A New Push for Sovereign Engine Technology

The proposed complex is envisioned as a centre of excellence for power and propulsion technology. It would aim to develop capabilities across the complete aero-engine lifecycle, including design, development, manufacturing, testing, production and through-life support.

For India, the initiative focuses on one of the most technically demanding areas of military aviation. Developing an advanced combat aircraft engine requires expertise across several specialised engineering and manufacturing disciplines. Building those capabilities within the country could strengthen India’s ability to develop and support future aircraft propulsion systems domestically.

The proposed facility could also create a broader industrial base for advanced propulsion technologies, extending beyond the immediate requirements of the AMCA programme.

Combining Rolls-Royce Expertise With Reliance Scale

The partnership is built around the complementary capabilities of the two companies. Rolls-Royce brings more than a century of experience in advanced engineering and combat aircraft propulsion, with its engines having powered fighter aircraft used by air forces around the world.

Reliance, meanwhile, brings large-scale industrial and manufacturing capabilities, along with experience in executing complex projects in India. The proposed collaboration would combine these strengths with the objective of creating a domestic ecosystem for advanced aero-engine development.

Anant Ambani, Executive Director of Reliance Industries, said the partnership is intended to combine Rolls-Royce’s expertise in advanced propulsion with Reliance’s technology, manufacturing, scale and execution capabilities. He also linked the initiative to India’s goal of building sovereign capabilities in strategically important technologies.

Rolls-Royce CEO Tufan Erginbilgic described the collaboration as an important milestone, highlighting the combination of the company’s engineering and engine expertise with Reliance’s industrial presence in India.

AMCA Engine at the Centre of the Programme

The AMCA is being developed as India’s next-generation fighter aircraft programme and is intended to provide a fifth-generation stealth combat aircraft capability. The programme is being led by the Aeronautical Development Agency under the Defence Research and Development Organisation.

The aircraft’s propulsion system is particularly important because advanced fighter engines require highly sophisticated technologies and manufacturing capabilities. India has historically relied on foreign suppliers for many advanced combat aircraft engines, making domestic development a major technological challenge.

The proposed Reliance-Rolls-Royce partnership aims to address this challenge by exploring an indigenous engine capability in India. The objective is not limited to manufacturing, with the proposed Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex intended to cover development, testing, production and long-term support.

Building a Wider Aerospace Manufacturing Base

The planned complex could also have applications beyond the AMCA programme. Reliance and Rolls-Royce said the proposed collaboration could open opportunities in defence, civil aerospace and new power and propulsion systems.

Such a capability could help expand the role of Indian industry across different stages of the aerospace value chain. It could also support the development of specialised engineering, manufacturing and testing capabilities required for future propulsion programmes.

The partnership therefore extends beyond the immediate requirement of a fighter aircraft engine. Its broader objective is to establish an industrial foundation capable of supporting advanced propulsion technologies in India.

A Significant Step Towards Defence Self-Reliance

The initiative comes as India continues to strengthen domestic defence manufacturing and reduce dependence on imported military equipment and technologies. The government’s wider push for indigenisation has encouraged greater participation from Indian industry and the development of domestic capabilities in strategically important defence sectors.

An indigenous combat aircraft engine would represent a particularly significant technological achievement because of the complexity involved in designing, developing, manufacturing and maintaining such systems.

The Reliance-Rolls-Royce announcement currently represents a strategic intent to pursue the partnership and explore the proposed Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex. If the initiative progresses into a fully operational programme, it could become an important part of India’s effort to establish a stronger domestic ecosystem for advanced aerospace propulsion and support the country’s broader Atmanirbhar Bharat ambitions.
