In a key appointment, the government has appointed Poonam Gupta, Director General of the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), as the new Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Deputy Governor. Gupta, a distinguished economist with rich academic and professional experience, will hold office for three years in this key position.

Gupta brings to the role an extensive portfolio in economic policy, having previously held senior positions at international financial institutions, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in Washington, D.C. She joined NCAER in 2021 and has been an influential figure in the field of economic research and policy formulation in India.
In addition to her leadership at NCAER, Gupta serves as a member of the Economic Advisory Council to the Prime Minister and as the Convener of the Advisory Council to the 16th Finance Commission. Her academic credentials are equally noteworthy, holding a PhD in Economics from the University of Maryland, USA, and a Master’s degree from the Delhi School of Economics.
Her experience spans teaching roles at institutions like the Delhi School of Economics and the University of Maryland, alongside significant contributions to policy research as the RBI Chair Professor at the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP) and a Professor at the Indian Council for Research on International Economic Relations (ICRIER).
