OpenAI is strengthening its business leadership bench with the appointment of Samantha Jacobson as Vice President of Partnerships, Monetization.
Jacobson, who has served as Chief Strategy Officer at The Trade Desk, is moving to OpenAI at a time when the artificial intelligence company is expanding its commercial ecosystem beyond consumer subscriptions and enterprise tools. Her new role will focus on monetization partnerships, with responsibilities across advertising, distribution, platform infrastructure and new business models.
The Trade Desk has confirmed her departure from the executive role. However, Jacobson will continue to serve on the company’s board of directors even after taking up her position at OpenAI.
At OpenAI, Jacobson will report to Torben Severson, Vice President and Head of Global Business Development. She is expected to assume the role later this month.
Her move comes at a crucial moment for OpenAI. The company has already become one of the most watched names in global technology, but its next phase will depend heavily on how it builds sustainable business partnerships. Jacobson’s background at The Trade Desk, a major player in digital advertising technology, gives her direct exposure to the intersection of data, platforms, advertisers and monetization models.
The appointment also signals OpenAI’s growing focus on partnership-led growth. As AI tools become more deeply embedded in search, content, workplace software, developer platforms and brand communication, monetization will no longer be limited to paid access. Distribution, infrastructure tie-ups and advertising-linked possibilities may become important parts of the company’s commercial roadmap.
For the advertising and technology industries, Jacobson’s transition is notable because it connects two fast-changing worlds: programmatic advertising and generative AI. While OpenAI has not announced a specific advertising product through this appointment, the creation of a senior monetization partnerships role shows that the company is preparing for a broader business architecture.
Jacobson’s continued presence on The Trade Desk’s board also keeps her linked to the ad-tech ecosystem while she steps into one of the most influential AI companies in the world.
