OpenAI has secured approximately $11 billion in fresh funding at a valuation of $1.25 trillion, marking the first tranche of a larger fundraising round that could reach $20 billion. The funding comes as investors become more cautious about the artificial intelligence sector, particularly over rising infrastructure costs, data centre investments and potential regulatory challenges.

The funds had been transferred to OpenAI by Friday, November 6, according to a Bloomberg report citing people familiar with the matter. The remaining portion of the fundraising round is expected to close in the coming weeks.

The latest funding marks a significant reduction from OpenAI’s earlier fundraising ambitions. The company had initially sought to raise at least $30 billion at a valuation of $1.4 trillion. However, it scaled back its target following a decline in AI-related stocks and changing investor sentiment.

OpenAI had also spent more than a month in discussions with potential investors while delaying its plans for an initial public offering (IPO).

Coatue and T. Rowe Price Join OpenAI’s Funding Round

Coatue Management and T. Rowe Price are among the investors participating in the first $11 billion tranche.

Other investors involved in the broader fundraising round include SoftBank Group, Sequoia Capital, Founders Fund and Andreessen Horowitz. A group of investors from the United Arab Emirates has also joined the round.

Beyond institutional investors, OpenAI is working with investment banks to explore fundraising opportunities among high-net-worth individuals and retail investors.

The participation of these investors comes as OpenAI continues to attract substantial capital despite growing questions about the financial sustainability of the AI investment boom.

Rising AI Infrastructure Costs Put Pressure on Valuations

Investor enthusiasm towards artificial intelligence companies has faced increasing pressure as the costs of building and operating AI infrastructure continue to attract scrutiny.

Large-scale data centres require substantial investment, while questions surrounding future regulations and approvals for new infrastructure projects have added uncertainty to the sector.

The US midterm elections have also emerged as a factor investors are watching, particularly over the possibility of regulatory hurdles affecting data centre construction.

These concerns have contributed to a broader reassessment of valuations across the AI industry, even as companies continue to pursue significant investments in the technology.

Anthropic Also Faces Valuation Reassessment

OpenAI is not the only major AI company experiencing a shift in investor expectations.

Its rival Anthropic is also facing changing valuation discussions ahead of its anticipated initial public offering. Investors considering the company’s listing are now discussing a valuation range of $1.2 trillion to $1.3 trillion, compared with an earlier expectation of approximately $1.5 trillion.

The reassessment suggests that investors are becoming more selective about the prices they are willing to pay for leading AI companies.

Wall Street’s Technology Rally Faces Fresh Questions

The changing sentiment around AI investments has coincided with volatility across US technology stocks.

Wall Street technology shares recovered on Friday after experiencing their sharpest decline in more than a year. However, the rebound was not enough to prevent the Nasdaq Composite from recording its fourth consecutive weekly decline, Reuters reported.

The semiconductor index climbed 4.2% during Friday’s session. Nvidia gained 2.8%, while Advanced Micro Devices surged 11% and Sandisk advanced nearly 4%. The Nasdaq closed 1.1% higher after rising as much as 2% during the trading session.

Despite the recovery, investors remained cautious about whether tighter AI regulations and a potential slowdown in data centre investments could affect the technology rally.

For OpenAI, securing the first $11 billion provides fresh capital at a valuation of $1.25 trillion. However, the reduced fundraising target highlights how investor expectations are changing even for some of the biggest beneficiaries of the artificial intelligence boom.
