Grand Theft Auto 6’s multiplayer experience could become a second major event for Rockstar Games, with Twitch CEO Dan Clancy expecting an even bigger surge in viewership when the online mode arrives next year.
The excitement surrounding Grand Theft Auto 6 is already building ahead of its November release. But the game’s single-player launch may not be the only major moment for Rockstar Games in the coming months.
Twitch CEO Dan Clancy has indicated that GTA 6’s multiplayer mode could arrive in 2027, potentially bringing another wave of attention to the franchise. His comments also offer a glimpse into how Twitch is preparing for the game’s arrival and the creator opportunities that could follow.
However, Rockstar Games has yet to officially confirm the multiplayer release window, leaving players waiting for a formal announcement.
GTA 6 Multiplayer Could Bring a Bigger Twitch Surge in 2027
Speaking to Bloomberg at the Tokyo Game Show, Clancy discussed the expected impact of GTA 6 on Twitch and the streaming platform’s conversations with Rockstar.
“We spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans, and also helping them think about how they can engage our creators,” Clancy said.
He then pointed to the possibility of a second, potentially larger wave of activity after the game’s initial release.
“You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer.”
Since GTA 6 is scheduled to launch in November 2026, Clancy’s reference to next year points to 2027.
His remarks have drawn attention because they suggest that the multiplayer experience could arrive separately from the main game. Still, the statement should not be treated as a confirmed Rockstar release date. The developer has not publicly announced a specific launch schedule for GTA 6’s online component.
Why GTA 6 Multiplayer Could Matter More Than a Single Launch
The appeal of GTA 6 extends beyond its story campaign. The franchise’s online communities have also played a major role in keeping players engaged long after a game’s initial release.
GTA V’s online role-playing communities, in particular, have become a significant part of Twitch’s gaming content. These communities allow streamers to take on different characters, build storylines and interact with other players in shared virtual environments.
Players might portray police officers, criminals or judges, with their interactions creating unscripted situations that audiences can follow.
Clancy has described this kind of GTA role-playing as improvisational performance art. The format has also helped attract viewers who may not necessarily play the game themselves.
That existing audience provides context for his expectation that GTA 6’s multiplayer launch could generate even more Twitch activity than the initial release.
However, the actual scale of that increase remains unknown.
Twitch and Rockstar Have Already Discussed Creator Engagement
One of the more notable details in Clancy’s comments is his reference to discussions between Twitch and Rockstar about the game’s plans and creator engagement.
This suggests that the streaming platform is already considering how creators could participate in the GTA 6 launch and its subsequent multiplayer phase.
For Twitch, the opportunity extends beyond players purchasing the game. A major multiplayer release could create a continuing stream of gameplay, collaborations and role-playing content, potentially keeping audiences engaged well beyond the initial launch period.
Clancy expects GTA 6 to produce a meaningful increase in overall viewership. He also acknowledged that the exact size of the surge is difficult to predict.
His comments indicate Twitch’s expectations, rather than a guarantee of how audiences will respond once the game becomes available.
Rockstar Has Yet to Reveal GTA 6 Online Details
Despite the growing discussion around multiplayer, Rockstar Games has not officially announced its release date, features or final name.
It also remains unclear whether the next online experience will retain the GTA Online branding or introduce a different identity.
For now, players should distinguish Clancy’s comments from a formal announcement by Rockstar. Although his remarks point towards a possible 2027 launch, the developer has not confirmed that timeline.
GTA 6 is scheduled to release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
If Clancy’s expectation reflects Rockstar’s current plans, the game’s multiplayer experience could provide a second major moment for the franchise in 2027, while giving Twitch creators another opportunity to build content around one of gaming’s most anticipated releases.
