Mukesh Ambani has announced a ₹10 lakh crore investment plan over the next seven years to establish a comprehensive artificial intelligence ecosystem in India. The commitment, unveiled at the India AI Impact Summit, marks one of the country’s largest long-term technology investments.

The proposed investment, equivalent to about $110 billion, will begin in 2026 and be executed through Reliance Industries and its telecom arm Jio. The initiative is aimed at building what Ambani described as sovereign AI infrastructure for India. He characterised the commitment as long-term, disciplined capital focused on nation-building rather than short-term gains.

The announcement comes at a time when Jio is widely expected to pursue a public listing, a move that could potentially position it as a major AI-focused enterprise in India’s capital markets.

Building Sovereign Compute Capacity at Scale

A central pillar of the plan is the development of India’s sovereign compute infrastructure. Under the banner of Jio Intelligence, the group intends to establish gigawatt-scale, AI-ready data centres designed to handle large-scale computing requirements.

To power this infrastructure sustainably, the project will rely on a 10 gigawatt surplus of green energy sourced from solar developments in Kutch and Andhra Pradesh. The integration of renewable energy into data centre operations is intended to ensure both scalability and environmental responsibility.

Alongside large data centres, the plan includes the creation of a nationwide edge computing network. This distributed architecture is expected to reduce latency and make AI applications more responsive. By positioning computing capacity closer to end users, the infrastructure aims to serve a wide spectrum of needs, from small retail outlets and local enterprises to agricultural communities.

Ambani pointed to India’s established digital public infrastructure, including Aadhaar and Unified Payments Interface, as a strong foundation for accelerating AI integration across sectors. These systems, which already support identity verification and real-time payments at scale, are seen as enabling platforms for AI-led services.

Extending the Jio Model to Artificial Intelligence

The strategy mirrors the approach Jio adopted in the telecom sector, where affordable mobile data significantly expanded digital access. Ambani has indicated that the objective is to make artificial intelligence widely accessible and cost-effective, reducing barriers for businesses and individuals.

As part of this effort, Jio is rolling out AI-driven platforms tailored to different segments. These include Jio Shikshak for multilingual education support, Jio Arogya for quick medical guidance, and Jio Krishi for hyperlocal farm advisory services. The emphasis is on practical applications that can directly benefit everyday users.

The company’s roadmap also includes the development of multilingual AI tools to reflect India’s linguistic diversity. Deep-technology applications for small and medium enterprises are expected to play a key role in improving productivity and competitiveness. From the outset, the initiative is designed to incorporate safeguards around trust, data security, and local data residency.

Positioning AI as a Catalyst for Skilled Employment

Addressing concerns that automation could displace jobs, Ambani has framed AI as a driver of high-skill employment and innovation. The broader ecosystem plan includes partnerships with startups, premier academic institutions such as the Indian Institutes of Technology and the Indian Institute of Science, as well as global technology players.

He has described artificial intelligence as a modern-day Akshaya Patra, capable of delivering sustained productivity and opportunity when responsibly deployed. The investment aims not only to build infrastructure but also to cultivate research, talent development, and advanced applications within India.

The vision aligns with India’s broader engagement in global discussions on AI governance and standards. With its expanding digital infrastructure and vast data ecosystem, the country is positioning itself to play a significant role in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.

Through this multi-layered strategy, Reliance and Jio are seeking to create a foundation that integrates infrastructure, energy, applications, and skills. The ₹10 lakh crore commitment signals a long-term bet on India’s ability to emerge as a leading AI economy in the decades ahead.
