7UP is changing the taste of its iconic lemon-lime soda for the first time in 15 years, and younger consumers are a major reason behind the move.

The nearly century-old soft drink is getting a permanent recipe update, with 7UP reducing its lemon flavour and bringing lime to the forefront. The change comes as citrus flavours continue to attract younger drinkers, particularly Gen Z and Gen Alpha.

7UP is giving lime a bigger role

The new recipe will have a stronger lime presence than the current formula, while the lemon flavour will become less prominent.

Keurig Dr Pepper, which owns 7UP, said its research found that 72% of Gen Z and Gen Alpha drinkers prefer citrus-forward flavours such as lime.

The company spent two years developing the new formula. The goal is to give 7UP a fresher and more distinctive citrus taste without moving too far away from what longtime customers already know.

A major recipe change after 15 years

The reformulation marks 7UP’s first major taste change in 15 years. While the brand has updated its image and packaging over the years, changing the flavour itself is a much bigger step for a product with generations of loyal consumers.

The company is betting that putting more emphasis on lime can help the brand connect with younger drinkers while keeping its established lemon-lime identity intact.

The new formula will also be used for Cherry 7UP and the zero-sugar versions of the drink.

The packaging is getting a fresh look too

The taste change comes with updated packaging designed to highlight the new flavour direction.

The words “Lime Lemon” will appear more prominently on the cans and bottles, while the packaging will feature a new vertical 7UP logo.

The refreshed packs are being rolled out across the US in the coming weeks, giving consumers a visual indication that the familiar soda has changed.

7UP is fighting for attention in a crowded market

The move comes as competition in the US lemon-lime soda category remains strong. Coca-Cola’s Sprite continues to lead the segment, while PepsiCo’s Starry is also competing for consumers.

7UP is also facing competition from newer beverage brands that are attracting customers with different flavours and positioning.

With consumers increasingly looking for bold and distinctive tastes, making lime more prominent could give 7UP a way to stand out while staying within the familiar citrus category.

Gen Z is changing what younger consumers want to drink

The focus on lime is closely linked to changing beverage preferences among younger consumers.

Keurig Dr Pepper’s research indicates that citrus-forward flavours have strong appeal among Gen Z and Gen Alpha. For an established brand such as 7UP, those preferences offer an opportunity to update a familiar product rather than completely reinvent it.

The strategy is simple: keep the drink recognisable, but make its citrus character more noticeable to a new generation of consumers.

The biggest challenge is keeping loyal fans happy

Changing the taste of a well-known soft drink can be risky. Consumers who have been drinking 7UP for years may not immediately welcome a different flavour profile.

That is why the company spent two years developing the new formula. The intention is to introduce a noticeable lime flavour while preserving the qualities that have made 7UP a familiar name.

For 7UP, the change represents an attempt to move forward without leaving its past behind. After 15 years with the same major recipe, the brand is betting that a little more lime could help it stay relevant with the next generation of soda drinkers.
