BacAlt Biosciences, a biotechnology startup in Bengaluru that works on sustainable and bio-based ingredients, has raised $2 million (around ₹18 crore) in a pre-seed funding round. The round was led by Avaana Capital with participation from Lubrizol InnoVentures. The latest infusion values the company at approximately $8 million and highlights rising investor confidence in India’s bio-manufacturing sector.

Fueling Research and Expansion

The startup intends to allocate the funding to enhance its research and development capability, develop pilot-scale manufacturing facilities, hire specialized technical expertise, and prepare for launch in both domestic and foreign geographies. All these intended uses of the Funding will support BacAlt in demonstrating that it can commercialize its lab-scale processes at industrial scale.

The pilot production units are expected to de-risk early supply chains, while expanded R&D capacity will accelerate new product development. Hiring in process engineering and product development is also a priority to ensure smooth scale-up and product consistency.

What BacAlt is Building

Founded in 2023 by biotechnologists Shruti Kutmutia and Pranav Nair, BacAlt Biosciences is working to create bio-based polymers and specialty ingredients that aim to replace materials made from petrochemicals. Some of the products BacAlt is developing include bacterial cellulose and poly-gamma glutamic acid (γ-PGA), which can be used in a wide range of industries such as personal care, textiles, agriculture, and as a wound care ingredient.

The technology relies on waste valorisation, circular feedstocks, and non-sterile, high-throughput fermentation to enable cost and energy savings and scalability and sustainability. BacAlt Biosciences’ goal is to create high-performance alternatives to traditional petrochemicals to prevent microplastic pollution and support the move to greener supply chains.

Strategic Value of Investors

The investment was led by Avaana Capital, a venture firm recognized for supporting sustainability-focused startups and deep-technology businesses. Its backing signals confidence in BacAlt’s potential to scale into a competitive global player.

Lubrizol InnoVentures, the corporate venture arm of global specialty chemicals leader Lubrizol, also participated in the round. The involvement of a multinational strategic investor adds credibility to BacAlt’s plans, providing potential access to technical expertise, global networks, and collaboration opportunities for commercialization.

India’s Bioeconomy Context

BacAlt’s fundraise comes at a time when India’s bioeconomy is expanding rapidly. The government’s value of the sector for 2024 is over $165 billion and has created programs, such as BioE3 policy, to promote advanced biomanufacturing, while also reducing the reliance on imported raw materials. These policies create the ideal environment for startups working on sustainable and circular technologies.

India’s positioning as a future hub for bio-based specialty ingredients is further supported by increasing global demand for eco-friendly, high-performance materials and tightening regulations around microplastics. Startups like BacAlt are well placed to serve both domestic markets and international customers seeking alternatives to fossil-based inputs.

Challenges to Overcome

Even with all of this momentum, biomanufacturing is still complicated to scale. Companies like BacAlt will need to demonstrate that they can show batch-to-batch consistency and cost competitiveness and that they can meet regulatory requirements in different industries. Reliable feedstock access and customer adoption at scale will be critical success factors too.

Pilot-scale operations in the near term will be critical in addressing these hurdles and establishing trust with potential partners in consumer goods, healthcare, and agriculture.

Outlook for BacAlt

The coming 12 to 24 months will be decisive for BacAlt. Success in demonstrating scalable production, securing commercial partnerships, and validating its cost-performance claims could pave the way for larger funding rounds and international expansion.

If the company meets its objectives, BacAlt will significantly help enhance India’s profile in the global bioeconomy, cut down on dependence on petrochemical-derived products, and assist in the formation of a sustainable manufacturing ecosystem of the future.
