Deep-tech manufacturer Chara Technologies has raised ₹52 crore (≈$6 million) in a Series A round led by Arkam Ventures, with participation from Exfinity Venture Partners, Kalaari Capital, and IIMA Ventures. The company designs rare-earth-free electric motors and controllers, a category that has drawn attention as automakers and industrial buyers look to diversify away from magnet supply constraints.

Chara Technologies: What will the funding power?
Founder and CEO Bhaktha Keshavachar said the capital will fund a new factory and testing facility in Bengaluru, aimed at multiplying output fivefold, from ~20,000 units to 100,000 units a year. The company will also launch lighter, higher-speed motor lines and industrial variants, while investing in controls, algorithms, and system-level efficiency to sharpen performance across applications.
Why it matters?
- Strategic independence: Motors that do not rely on rare-earth magnets can help OEMs mitigate commodity and geopolitical risks that periodically disrupt supply chains. Chara’s focus slots into a broader push for cost-stable, scalable electrification components.
- Local manufacturing muscle: The Bengaluru facility is intended to lift domestic capacity meaningfully, positioning the company to serve EV and industrial demand with shorter lead times and localized testing.
Product roadmap
Alongside capacity expansion, Chara plans to introduce:
- Lightweight, high-RPM motors targeted at segments that prioritise power density and responsiveness, and
- Industrial-grade variants designed for durability and efficiency in continuous-duty environments.
- Both tracks will be supported by deeper R&D in control algorithms and system efficiency, indicating a push beyond hardware into integrated motor-controller stacks.
Who’s backing the bet?
The round brings together a deep-tech-leaning investor set: lead Arkam Ventures, plus Exfinity, Kalaari, and IIMA Ventures, firms that have historically backed frontier hardware and enterprise technology in India. Their participation underscores investor appetite for home-grown electrification IP and import-light component ecosystems.
The founding bench
Chara is led by Bhaktha Keshavachar (Founder & CEO), Mahalingam Koushik (Founder & CTO), and Ravi Prasad (Founder & Chief Motor Designer), a team combining systems thinking with motor design depth. The expanded testing facility indicates that design-to-production feedback loops will be a central operating principle as the company scales.
The near-term picture
- Capacity: Targeting 1 lakh units annually once the new facility is fully online.
- Pipeline: New motor families addressing both mobility and industrial segments.
- R&D focus: Controls and efficiency to push performance without rare-earth magnets.
Over the next few quarters, key signals will be (a) commissioning milestones at the Bengaluru plant, (b) OEM wins across 2- and 3-wheeler EVs and industrial drives, and (c) how Chara’s algorithmic control stack translates into efficiency and cost advantages at scale.
Those outcomes will determine how quickly rare-earth-free designs can move from a compelling thesis to a default choice in India’s motor market.
