India’s Economy to Grow 6.5%-6.7% Amid Global Changes

Ed-tech giant upGrad has entered into a partnership with the Government of Maharashtra by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish AI Excellence Centres throughout the state. This agreement was formalised on 23 January 2025 at Davos in the presence of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and upGrad’s co-founder Ronnie Screwvala.

Investment in AI education

The bold plan starts with a fund of ₹2,150 crore. It aims to teach more than 1 million students in AI and new tech fields. This move seeks to build a group of skilled workers in AI and increase job chances in Maharashtra. It sets the state up as a main spot for AI jobs around the world.

Focus on rural talent

In addition to urban advancements, the project will address the skill gap in rural areas. A key component of the initiative focuses on empowering 250,000 rural youth by offering targeted training programs and fostering entrepreneurship in underserved regions. This pillar aims to provide equal opportunities for professional growth in both urban and rural areas.

Urban university and campus hubs

Under Maharashtra’s ‘Educity’ initiative, upGrad will partner with three global universities to establish an urban university and several campus hubs. These educational centres will aim to deliver world-class education in collaboration with international institutions.

ATLAS skillTech university’s role

As part of the Maharashtra State University of Eminence initiative, the upGrad-supported ATLAS SkillTech University will develop bespoke hybrid programs in cutting-edge fields such as AI, digital transformation, design, technology, and gaming. Dr. Indu Shahani, Founding Chancellor and President of ATLAS SkillTech University, remarked, “By providing future-ready skills, this collaboration aims to bridge gaps and create transformative opportunities for both urban and rural communities.”

Ronnie Screwvala’s vision

Expressing his enthusiasm for the partnership, upGrad co-founder Ronnie Screwvala highlighted the importance of extending Maharashtra’s robust urban learning infrastructure to rural regions. “This collaboration will accelerate our goal of producing the largest AI-ready workforce for global careers. ATLAS SkillTech University will play a pivotal role in ensuring quality education is accessible to all,” Screwvala stated.
