Ed Sheeran has found himself at the centre of an unusually complicated tour controversy, even though he says the decision that triggered it was not ultimately his.

The dispute began with Macklemore’s pro-Palestinian remarks while opening for Sheeran in New Jersey. It quickly expanded into a fight over free expression, venue control, artist responsibility and the limits of keeping politics away from a global concert tour. Within days, Macklemore was off the remaining US dates, every other supporting act had withdrawn, and Sheeran was facing criticism over how the situation had been handled.

Now, another development has added a very different dimension to the story.

Robert Kraft says Sheeran privately approached him about committing $2 million towards humanitarian aid before Macklemore publicly challenged Kraft to match a $1 million donation to Palestinian organisations.

The disclosure has complicated a controversy that had increasingly portrayed Sheeran through the decisions surrounding Macklemore’s removal.

How did the Ed Sheeran and Macklemore controversy start?

Macklemore appeared as a supporting act during two Ed Sheeran concerts in New Jersey in early September. During those performances, he called for a “free Palestine,” showed images from Gaza and made other remarks from the stage.

Robert Kraft, whose Kraft Group owns Gillette Stadium in Massachusetts, later confirmed that Macklemore would not be allowed to perform at the venue. Kraft accused the rapper of hate speech and also alleged a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric, an accusation Macklemore denies.

Macklemore has argued that his criticism of Israel should not be treated as hostility towards Jewish people. In addressing the reaction to his remarks, he said antisemitism was real while maintaining that criticism of Israel and calls to “Free Palestine” should not automatically be equated with hatred of Jewish people.

The dispute moved beyond one stadium.

Macklemore said Sheeran told him that Kraft would not allow him to perform at Gillette Stadium and claimed stadium owners had effectively presented Sheeran with an ultimatum: remove Macklemore or risk losing access to venues. Kraft did not confirm Macklemore’s claim that he had coordinated with other stadium owners.

Sheeran, however, has said that the final call to remove Macklemore was made by the tour promoter, Messina Touring Group, rather than by him personally. The promoter said some venues would not host the concerts if Macklemore remained on the bill, potentially threatening scheduled shows.

Why is Ed Sheeran being criticised if he says he did not remove Macklemore?

Sheeran may not have made the formal decision, but he remains the headline artist whose name is attached to the Loop Tour.

That placed him at the centre of the fallout once Macklemore was removed.

The criticism intensified when the tour’s other supporting artists, Finneas, Aaron Rowe, Beoga and Lukas Graham, withdrew. The departures were described as being in solidarity with Macklemore, with the artists arguing that his removal raised concerns about artists being silenced for expressing political views.

Sheeran responded by saying he respected Macklemore’s willingness to stand up for what he believes. He also explained that he chooses not to use his own public platform for politics, while insisting that this does not mean he does not care or support causes privately.

That position is part of what has made the episode so difficult for Sheeran to navigate.

The debate is no longer only about whether Macklemore should have remained on the tour. It also concerns how much responsibility a headline artist carries when promoters, venues and stadium owners impose conditions on a tour bearing that artist’s name.

Macklemore then turned the dispute towards humanitarian aid

After being removed from the remaining US dates, Macklemore announced that he would donate the entire $1 million in net earnings he said he had received from Sheeran’s Loop Tour to six organisations supporting Palestinians.

He also publicly challenged Kraft to match the donation.

The move shifted the public argument again.

What had begun as a dispute over an artist’s remarks on stage was now also about money, humanitarian assistance and whether prominent people involved in the controversy would contribute.

That is when Kraft disclosed Sheeran’s private approach.

Kraft said Sheeran had contacted him before Macklemore issued his public challenge.

According to Kraft, Sheeran asked him to commit $2 million towards humanitarian aid in the region and to match a donation Sheeran himself was making. Kraft also said Sheeran intended to approach other venue owners in an effort to encourage additional contributions.

Kraft’s account suggests Sheeran was discussing humanitarian assistance privately before Macklemore publicly challenged Kraft over donations.

But there is an important limitation.

Kraft did not confirm whether he had actually agreed to make the $2 million contribution, nor did he identify where such funds would go. The BBC report also noted that Sheeran himself had not publicly commented on the claimed $2 million donation or provided details of any broader philanthropic plan.

So, while Kraft’s statement adds context to Sheeran’s role, it should not be treated as independent confirmation that the $2 million donation has already been made.

The controversy has become bigger than one tour decision

There are now several separate issues running through the same story.

Macklemore’s supporters have focused on artistic freedom and whether political expression led to his removal. Kraft has defended his position while saying support for Palestinians should not come at the expense of the Jewish community and while criticising what he described as the omission of Hamas’ responsibility from the discussion.

Sheeran, meanwhile, has tried to separate himself from the final removal decision while continuing with the tour.

He said cancelling would affect fans and crew, while reports noted that abandoning dates could also create substantial financial consequences involving venue costs and ticket refunds.

That leaves Sheeran in an awkward position.

He is neither the artist who made the remarks that started the dispute nor, according to his account, the person who made the final decision to remove Macklemore. Yet as the tour’s headliner, his name remains attached to every stage of the controversy.

So why is Ed Sheeran facing backlash?

The backlash is largely the result of that gap between formal responsibility and public responsibility.

Sheeran says the promoter made the ultimate decision. Macklemore has described pressure from venue owners. Kraft has acknowledged barring Macklemore from Gillette Stadium. Supporting artists responded by leaving the tour. And Sheeran chose to continue performing rather than cancel the remaining dates.

Each development has kept Sheeran at the centre of the conversation, even when the underlying decisions involved other parties.

The latest $2 million aid claim complicates the picture further. It suggests, based on Kraft’s account, that Sheeran was privately pursuing humanitarian assistance while publicly taking a more restrained position on the political dispute.
