More than two decades after viewers first followed five friends into MacLaren’s Pub, the lives behind How I Met Your Mother look very different.
The CBS sitcom premiered on September 19, 2005, introducing audiences to Ted Mosby, Marshall Eriksen, Robin Scherbatsky, Barney Stinson and Lily Aldrin. What began as Ted’s long explanation to his children about how he met their mother ultimately stretched across nine seasons before the series ended in March 2014.
The actors who spent those years together have since moved into new television projects, films, theatre, music and family life. And while the fictional group remained tightly connected on screen, Josh Radnor recently offered a more ordinary picture of what happened to the cast after filming ended.
During an August 2026 appearance on the Half the Picture podcast, Radnor said the cast is no longer particularly close, although he stressed there was nothing dramatic behind the distance.
He compared the experience to college, when people can spend an intense period seeing one another almost every day before eventually moving into separate chapters of their lives.
That may be the clearest way to describe where the How I Met Your Mother cast is now. There was no single post-show path. Some found major new franchises, others built acclaimed television careers, and several reached important milestones away from the screen.
Josh Radnor moved beyond Ted Mosby, but continues revisiting the show
Radnor spent nine seasons playing Ted, the architect and hopeless romantic at the centre of the story.
His career after the sitcom included television roles in Mercy Street, Fleishman Is in Trouble and Hunters. He has also worked in theatre and released several studio albums.

His connection to How I Met Your Mother, however, has not disappeared completely. Radnor now hosts the How We Made Your Mother podcast with series co-creator Craig Thomas, revisiting the making of the sitcom years after it finished.
His personal life has also changed significantly. Radnor married Jordana Jacobs in January 2024 after announcing their engagement in 2023. The couple later welcomed their first child, a son, in late 2025 or early 2026.
Cobie Smulders built a second screen identity through Marvel
For viewers who knew Cobie Smulders first as Canadian journalist Robin Scherbatsky, her post-sitcom career quickly expanded far beyond the world of MacLaren’s Pub.

Smulders became Maria Hill in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, beginning with The Avengers in 2012. She later appeared in projects including Friends from College, Impeachment: American Crime Story, High School and How I Met Your Father.
Away from acting, Smulders has been married to former Saturday Night Live cast member Taran Killam since 2012. They have two daughters, Shaelyn and Janita.
Neil Patrick Harris went from Barney’s suits to Broadway and Count Olaf
Neil Patrick Harris left behind Barney Stinson’s elaborate schemes and “bro code” without slowing down.
Among his most prominent roles after the sitcom was Count Olaf in Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. He also appeared in the fourth Matrix film and led the comedy series Uncoupled.

One of his biggest achievements arrived on Broadway. Harris starred in Hedwig and the Angry Inch in 2014 and won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical.
Harris has been with actor and chef David Burtka since 2004. The couple, who share twins Gideon and Harper, married in Italy in 2014.
Alyson Hannigan continued across television, animation and reality competition
Alyson Hannigan had already built a substantial career before playing Lily Aldrin, and she remained active after How I Met Your Mother ended.
Her later work included voicing Claire Clancy in Fancy Nancy and playing Dr. Ann Possible in the 2019 live-action Kim Possible film.

In 2023, Hannigan entered a different kind of television spotlight when she competed in Season 32 of Dancing with the Stars. She finished the competition in fifth place.
Hannigan has been married to her former Buffy the Vampire Slayer co-star Alexis Denisof since 2003. They have two daughters.
Jason Segel found one of his strongest post-HIMYM chapters with Shrinking
Jason Segel’s Marshall Eriksen was one of the show’s emotional anchors, but Segel’s career after the series has increasingly placed him behind the creative process as well as in front of the camera.
He appeared in the film Our Friend and played Paul Westhead in HBO’s Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty.

His work on Apple TV’s Shrinking became an especially significant chapter. Segel co-created the series with Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein and has earned three Emmy nominations for his performance.
His personal life has also moved into a new phase. Segel and So You Think You Can Dance alum Kayla Radomski announced their engagement in June 2025.
Cristin Milioti turned a late-arriving sitcom role into an Emmy-winning career
Cristin Milioti had an unusual place in the original series.
After years of teasing the identity of Ted’s future wife, Milioti finally appeared as Tracy McConnell, the woman behind the show’s title and one of its most anticipated characters.

Her career after the sitcom included roles in Fargo, The Mindy Project, Made for Love and The Resort. She also starred opposite Andy Samberg in the 2020 romantic comedy Palm Springs.
Then came a major career milestone.
In September 2025, Milioti won her first Emmy Award for playing Sofia Falcone in The Penguin, opposite Colin Farrell. It marked one of the most notable awards breakthroughs among the performers associated with How I Met Your Mother.
Twenty years later, the cast connection looks different
The enduring appeal of How I Met Your Mother came partly from the idea that friendships could survive careers, relationships, arguments and enormous life changes.
Real life has been less sitcom-like.
Radnor’s description of the cast gradually dispersing after years of working together offers a surprisingly fitting postscript. The actors did not remain frozen as the group viewers remember from MacLaren’s Pub. Their careers branched into Marvel films, Broadway, prestige television, directing, music and award-winning performances, while marriages, children and engagements reshaped their lives away from work.
More than 20 years after the premiere, the most interesting part of the cast’s story may be just how little their paths resemble one another anymore.
