Airtel Payments Bank Ltd has announced a change in its leadership, with Shabnam Sinha set to become the company’s new Chairperson from October 1, 2026. She will take on the role for a three-year term, succeeding Sunil Bharti Mittal, who is completing his tenure as non-executive chairman.

The leadership transition will take effect after Mittal steps down from the board on September 30, 2026. Sinha’s appointment has been approved by the Board of Airtel Payments Bank and received approval from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

Shabnam Sinha to Begin Three-Year Tenure

Sinha already has experience with Airtel Payments Bank, having served as an independent Director on its board. In her current role, she chairs the Special Committee of the Board for Monitoring Frauds. She is also a member of the Risk Management and IT Committees.

Her professional experience extends beyond the banking sector. Sinha has worked with the World Bank, where she advised governments and institutions across Asia, Africa and Europe. Her experience in governance, risk management and institutional development will be relevant as she takes on the leadership of the payments bank.

With her appointment, Sinha will move from her existing position as an independent Director to the role of Chairperson, beginning October 1.

Sunil Bharti Mittal Marks Leadership Transition

Mittal is stepping down after serving as non-executive chairman of Airtel Payments Bank. Reflecting on his tenure, he said he was privileged to witness the company’s development from an initiative focused on accessibility into an institution serving millions of customers across urban and rural India.

He also highlighted the growth of the bank’s network and its focus on bringing underserved communities into formal banking. According to Mittal, the institution has also worked to provide customers with a safe, digital-first banking experience.

“It has been a privilege to serve as Chairman of Airtel Payments Bank and witness its journey from an accessibility-focused effort into a trusted institution serving millions across urban and rural India,” Mittal said.

He thanked the company’s team, Board and stakeholders for their trust and expressed confidence in Sinha’s ability to build on the foundation established during his tenure.

Sinha Focuses on Inclusive Digital Banking

Sinha said she is honoured to take on the responsibility at a time when digital financial services are playing an increasingly important role in India’s inclusive growth.

She pointed to Airtel Payments Bank’s combination of technology and accessible banking as an important part of its development. She also highlighted the bank’s role in serving customers across the country and connecting people with the formal financial system.

“I am honoured to assume this responsibility at Airtel Payments Bank at a time when digital financial services are becoming the backbone of India’s inclusive growth story,” Sinha said.

She thanked Mittal and the Board for their confidence in her and said she looks forward to working with the Board and management team during her tenure.

Focus Turns to the Bank’s Next Phase

Sinha’s appointment marks the next phase of leadership for Airtel Payments Bank as the company continues to focus on digital financial services and accessible banking.

As Chairperson, she will work with the Board and management team to build on the institution’s existing foundation. Her responsibilities will include supporting the bank’s future growth and expanding its impact among customers, partners and communities across India.

The transition will formally take place on October 1, following Mittal’s departure from the board on September 30, 2026. With Sinha taking charge for a three-year term, Airtel Payments Bank is set to enter its next leadership phase under a chairperson who is already familiar with its governance and operations.
