Vedanta Ltd has appointed Arun Misra as its new Chief Executive Officer for a one-year term beginning August 1, marking a key leadership change as the diversified natural resources company reported a sharp rise in its financial performance for the first quarter of the financial year.

The company announced the appointment on Thursday alongside its quarterly earnings, which showed a 72% year-on-year increase in consolidated net profit, supported by stronger commodity prices and robust growth across its metals business.

Arun Misra to Lead Vedanta from August 1

Arun Misra, who currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer of Hindustan Zinc, will take over as CEO of Vedanta from August 1 for a one-year tenure. He will step down from his current role at Hindustan Zinc before assuming his new responsibilities.

The leadership transition comes at a time when Vedanta continues to strengthen its core mining and metals operations while benefiting from favorable global commodity market conditions.

Strong Commodity Prices Lift Quarterly Earnings

Vedanta reported a consolidated net profit of ₹54.73 billion for the quarter ended June 30, compared with the corresponding period last year. The increase was largely driven by higher prices of key base metals, which improved the company’s revenue and profitability.

During the April to June quarter, global base metal prices remained firm due to a combination of supply disruptions and steady demand. Geopolitical tensions in the Middle East also contributed to concerns over commodity availability and logistics, supporting higher market prices.

Rising metal prices generally enable mining and metals companies to realize better selling prices, which in turn improves operating margins and overall profitability.

Revenue Climbs More Than 50%

Vedanta’s consolidated revenue increased 51% year-on-year to ₹234.56 billion during the June quarter, reflecting stronger performance across several of its business segments.

The company’s India zinc and lead business recorded nearly a 50% increase in revenue compared with the same period last year. Its copper business also posted solid growth, with revenue rising 34%.

The India silver segment delivered the strongest performance among the company’s businesses, with revenue more than doubling during the quarter, supported by significantly higher silver prices.

Metal Price Rally Supports Business Growth

Analysts at Emkay Global had earlier indicated that higher average zinc prices during the first quarter were expected to support Vedanta’s India zinc business and contribute positively to the company’s topline.

According to data cited in a note by Jefferies, spot zinc prices increased 31% year-on-year during the quarter. Copper prices rose 40%, while silver prices more than doubled over the same period.

The sharp increase in prices across these commodities provided a favorable environment for Vedanta’s mining and metals operations, helping improve both revenue and earnings.

Profit Margins Expand Despite Higher Costs

Vedanta also reported a significant improvement in profitability. Its net profit margin expanded to 22% during the quarter, up from 12% in the corresponding quarter of the previous year.

However, the company also faced higher input costs. The cost of raw materials consumed increased 37% year-on-year, contributing to a 33% rise in total expenses, which reached ₹175.58 billion during the quarter.

Despite the increase in costs, stronger commodity prices and higher revenue enabled the company to deliver substantially better earnings.

Group Companies Also Report Strong Results

Vedanta’s latest earnings follow strong quarterly performances by other companies within the group.

Last week, Hindustan Zinc reported that its quarterly profit more than doubled, supported by higher metal prices.

Earlier on Thursday, Vedanta Aluminium Metal, the pure-play aluminium company created following Vedanta’s demerger, also announced a more than three-fold increase in quarterly profit, driven by stronger aluminium prices.

Shares End Higher After Results

Investor sentiment remained positive following the earnings announcement and leadership update. Vedanta’s shares closed 1.1% higher after the company released its first-quarter results.

The latest financial performance highlights the positive impact of stronger global commodity prices on Vedanta’s diversified metals portfolio, while the appointment of Arun Misra marks a new phase in the company’s leadership as it continues to focus on its mining and metals businesses.
