Rohit Sharma has added another major achievement to his remarkable ODI career, becoming the fastest batter to score 10,000 runs as an opener in the format. The Indian batter reached the landmark in just 202 innings during the third ODI against the West Indies in New Chandigarh, moving past Sachin Tendulkar, who had taken 214 innings to achieve the same feat.
Rohit brought up the milestone with a couple off Jayden Seales early in his innings. He continued his impressive performance with the bat, eventually scoring 92 runs from 85 deliveries. Although he fell short of a century, his knock will be remembered for the record he broke.
The achievement also puts Rohit among a select group of batters who have crossed 10,000 ODI runs while opening the innings.
Rohit Sharma Joins Tendulkar, Jayasuriya and Gayle
With this milestone, Rohit has become only the fourth opener in ODI history to score 10,000 or more runs. He joins an elite list featuring Sachin Tendulkar, Sanath Jayasuriya and Chris Gayle.
However, it is the speed at which Rohit reached the landmark that makes the achievement particularly special. Tendulkar previously held the record after reaching 10,000 runs as an opener in 214 innings. Rohit has now bettered that mark by completing the milestone in 12 fewer innings.
The record further highlights his consistency at the top of the Indian batting order, where he has established himself as one of the most influential players in the format.
12,000 ODI Runs and 200 Sixes Add to Rohit’s Record Run
Rohit’s latest achievement comes shortly after another memorable performance in the same ODI series. During the second ODI against the West Indies in Guwahati, he scored 101 off 75 balls, helping India chase down a target of 406 runs.
His century also saw him cross the 12,000-run mark in ODI cricket. He reached the milestone in 282 innings, making him the second-fastest batter to do so, behind Virat Kohli, who achieved it in 242 innings.
The Guwahati match also brought another record. Rohit became the first batter to hit 200 ODI sixes in a single country, surpassing Chris Gayle’s previous record of 147 sixes in the Caribbean.
His century at the age of 39 years and 153 days also made him the oldest Indian to score an ODI hundred on home soil, going past Sunil Gavaskar’s previous record.
Rohit Sharma’s West Indies Series in Numbers
Rohit’s performances across the three-match ODI series have underlined his continued ability to deliver at the highest level. He finished with 225 runs from three matches, including a century and a 92-run knock.
His 255-run opening partnership with Shubman Gill in the second ODI was another major highlight of the series. The partnership played an important role in India’s successful chase and demonstrated the impact of the opening combination.
With multiple milestones coming in consecutive matches, Rohit has given another reminder of his value to India’s ODI batting lineup.
Can Rohit Sharma Continue Until the 2027 ODI World Cup?
Rohit’s recent performances have also brought renewed attention to his possible role in India’s plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Questions surrounding his age and fitness have made his future in the format a subject of discussion.
However, his performances against the West Indies have strengthened his case as an experienced option at the top of the order. His ability to score quickly, build substantial partnerships and deliver big innings remains an important part of his ODI record.
While questions about India’s future combination will continue, Rohit’s latest records have added another chapter to his career. By surpassing Tendulkar’s mark in just 202 innings, he has set a new benchmark for future generations of ODI openers.
