Marvel Studios has finally put names and faces to its new X-Men.

After months of casting speculation, screen tests and dealmaking, the studio used its D23 presentation to reveal seven major character pairings for the upcoming film. The movie is scheduled to reach theaters on May 5, 2028, giving Marvel a firm date for the mutant team’s next big-screen chapter.

The lineup brings together Sadie Sink as Jean Grey, Kit Connor as Cyclops, Christopher Abbott as Professor X, Samara Weaving as Emma Frost, Inde Navarrette as Rogue and Maya Boyd as Storm. Adam Driver will play Mr. Sinister, placing him on the other side of the conflict from the newly assembled team.

Marvel Studios chief Kevin Feige presented the cast at D23, while Driver joined the announcement through a video appearance.

Seven roles give Marvel’s X-Men a clear foundation

What had been a long-running casting puzzle now looks much more like an actual ensemble.

Abbott takes on Charles Xavier, better known as Professor X, the telepathic leader closely associated with the X-Men. Connor steps into the role of Cyclops, while Sink plays Jean Grey. Weaving joins as Emma Frost, Navarrette has been cast as Rogue and Boyd will play Storm.

Driver’s casting adds the first clearly identified villain to the group, with the actor set to play Mr. Sinister.

His D23 appearance also gave the announcement one of its more playful moments. Driver initially said he was playing Magneto before pausing and adding, “No wait, Nathaniel Milbury.” The confirmed character attached to Driver in the cast announcement is Mr. Sinister.

Driver also spoke about the discussions that eventually brought him into Marvel’s cinematic universe, saying he and Feige had been talking for years about finding a way for him to join. He said they had eventually found something that felt right with characters he cared deeply about.

Marvel’s casting search stretched through the summer

The final lineup follows a lengthy casting process.

Director Jake Schreier and Marvel executives had been meeting and auditioning actors throughout the summer, with another round of tests taking place after the Fourth of July holiday.

Some pieces of the ensemble had already begun falling into place before D23. Connor’s involvement as Cyclops and Weaving’s casting as Emma Frost had previously been reported, while Abbott had tested for Professor X. D23 turned those individual developments into a much clearer picture of the film Marvel is building.

Schreier, who directed Thunderbolts, is directing the new X-Men movie.

The mix of performers also gives the cast a noticeably varied background. Navarrette comes into the project following Obsession, while Boyd has a Broadway background and led & Juliet. Abbott’s work has moved between television, film and the stage.

The May 5, 2028 date ends another major question

The cast was not the only important detail Marvel settled at D23.

The May 5, 2028 release date puts a specific marker on a project that audiences have been waiting years to see take shape under Marvel Studios.

Disney acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, bringing the X-Men film rights under the same corporate roof as Marvel Studios. Since then, the question has not simply been whether the mutants would appear in Marvel’s wider cinematic world, but what a new version of the core team would actually look like.

That picture is now considerably sharper.

The main X-Men team has not assembled on screen since 2019’s Dark Phoenix, which featured James McAvoy as Charles Xavier, Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Sophie Turner as Jean Grey and Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, among others. Fox’s wider X-Men film run later concluded with the 2020 spinoff The New Mutants.

Several performers from earlier X-Men movies have since returned to Marvel projects, but the newly announced 2028 film is building its own central lineup.

A new generation rather than a simple recreation

Marvel’s choices suggest a cast designed around a fresh ensemble rather than a straightforward recreation of either previous X-Men era.

Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy have both played Professor X on film. Cyclops, Jean Grey and Storm have likewise been portrayed by multiple actors across the Fox movies. The 2028 film now hands those characters to Abbott, Connor, Sink and Boyd, while bringing Navarrette’s Rogue and Weaving’s Emma Frost into the same announced group.

With seven major roles now identified, a director in place and an exact release date on the calendar, Marvel’s X-Men has moved beyond years of speculation.

The next big questions concern the story and how this particular group of mutants will be brought together. For now, Marvel has answered the casting question with its clearest statement yet: its new X-Men have been chosen, and their film is dated for May 5, 2028.
