Key differences between GTA 5 and GTA 6: The easiest way to talk about the difference between GTA 5 and GTA 6 is to say that the newer game looks better. The more interesting question is where that difference actually becomes visible.

A comparison circulating among Grand Theft Auto fans has triggered exactly that debate. Side-by-side images of the two games show characters, nightlife scenes and environmental details that can initially appear surprisingly close. Look a little longer, however, and smaller details begin to tell a different story.

One Reddit user found perhaps the most unusual example in a weight-lifting scene. In the GTA 5 image, the circular weights were described as having visibly sharper polygonal edges. In the corresponding GTA 6 image, those edges were said to be far harder to notice. It is a tiny observation, but it captures the broader argument around the comparison better than simply declaring one game “more realistic.”

GTA 6 appears smoother where GTA 5 starts to show its age

Much of the discussion centres on geometry and lighting rather than a single dramatic graphical trick.

One participant who was asked what actually looked different pointed specifically to improved polygons and lighting. The weight plates became their clearest example because a simple round object exposes the limits of the older image immediately.

The same effect can be noticed in character comparisons. Faces, clothing and silhouettes in the newer material appear to carry finer visual detail, while the GTA 5 examples can look more rigid when placed directly beside them.

That distinction matters because GTA 5 does not suddenly look poor. In fact, a striking number of people came away from the comparison with the opposite reaction. Several commenters said the exercise reminded them how impressive the older game can still look. One wrote that the comparison made them realise “how good the graphics in GTA V are even for such an old game.”

The gap, then, is easier to appreciate in the details than in a quick glance.

Lighting may be doing as much work as character detail

The comparison shown on the first page places similar nightlife scenes from GTA 5 and GTA 6 one above the other. Both contain a male character in the foreground, artificial lighting and a busy background, which makes differences in presentation easier to spot.

The newer scene gives the impression of greater depth through the way the foreground character, surrounding people and background lighting sit together. That impression is consistent with the discussion’s focus on lighting as one of the most noticeable areas of change.

But this is also where the comparison needs some caution.

Not every image being circulated represents an identical technical test. One commenter noted that a particular comparison appeared to place a protagonist model against an NPC, adding that NPC models can be of lower quality.

Another warned that the GTA 6 material being compared included promotional stills, arguing that promotional material from GTA 5 could also look considerably better than an image recreated during normal play.

Those observations are important. A striking screenshot can demonstrate visual potential, but it cannot by itself establish how every scene will look during ordinary gameplay.

The GTA 5 side of the comparison is complicated too

There is another problem with treating every side-by-side image as a definitive technical comparison: GTA 5 itself can appear very different depending on which version or setup is being shown.

The discussion includes debate over vanilla, enhanced and modded versions of the game. One player described becoming accustomed to playing GTA 5 with mods and then being surprised by how dated the unmodified version appeared after those additions were disabled.

Another commenter explicitly pointed out that one comparison was using the PS5 upgrade version.

That means the phrase “GTA 5 versus GTA 6” can hide several variables. The comparison may involve different versions, different types of scenes and, in some cases, promotional imagery rather than equivalent gameplay captures.

A fair reading therefore focuses on what can actually be seen, rather than turning every screenshot into a claim about the finished games.

The biggest difference may not be the one visible in screenshots

One of the more thoughtful comments in the discussion argues that graphics alone may not ultimately define the gap between the two titles.

The commenter noted that GTA 5 had been modernised over a long period and suggested that gameplay and new features, rather than graphics, could become the areas where GTA 6 stands apart most clearly.

That point exposes the main limitation of the current comparison.

Screenshots can show geometry, lighting, character modelling and environmental presentation. They cannot tell us how a world behaves once the player begins interacting with it.

Other participants made a similar distinction more directly, pointing out that the images were not necessarily reflective of gameplay and that no actual gameplay was being shown in the examples being discussed.

For now, visual comparisons are exactly that: visual comparisons.

So, how different do GTA 5 and GTA 6 really look?

Based strictly on the material being compared, GTA 6 shows its clearest advantage in smaller visual details. Polygon edges appear less obvious, lighting looks more refined and character models appear more intricate.

At the same time, the images make a surprisingly strong case for GTA 5. Rather than rendering its predecessor instantly obsolete, the newer material has prompted plenty of players to notice how well the older game’s visual presentation can still hold together. Several participants even said the screenshots looked more similar than they expected.

That is what makes the comparison interesting.

The story is not simply that GTA 6 looks better. A newer game looking more polished would hardly be remarkable on its own. The revealing part is how the difference emerges: in rounder weights, cleaner geometry, more convincing lighting and details that become obvious only when two scenes are placed next to one another.

Sometimes a generational visual change announces itself with an entire city skyline.

Here, one of its clearest clues might simply be the edge of a gym weight.
