Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro is expected to arrive with a handful of upgrades that could make it more than just a routine yearly refresh. The biggest changes are tipped to focus on the processor, camera system, battery efficiency, display design and connectivity.
Apple has scheduled its next major event for September 9, where the company is expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max, meanwhile, already offer Apple’s A19 Pro chip, a 48MP triple-camera system and a new aluminium unibody design.

With the iPhone 18 Pro now just days away, here are the five upgrades that could separate it from the iPhone 17 Pro and whether they are enough to justify buying the new model.
1. A20 Pro could bring a bigger performance jump
The most important internal upgrade is expected to be Apple’s A20 Pro chip. Reports suggest the processor could be manufactured using TSMC’s 2nm process, compared with the 3nm technology used for the A19 Pro in the iPhone 17 Pro.
A move to a newer manufacturing process could improve both performance and power efficiency. That could be particularly useful for demanding games, intensive applications and Apple’s expanding AI features.
However, iPhone 17 Pro users are unlikely to find their phones suddenly slow or outdated. The A19 Pro is already a high-performance chip, meaning the A20 Pro upgrade is likely to matter more to users who want the newest hardware or keep their phones for several years.
2. Variable aperture could change the camera experience
The camera may be where the iPhone 18 Pro offers one of its most noticeable differences.
Leaks have repeatedly pointed to a variable aperture main camera, which would allow the lens to control how much light reaches the sensor. The iPhone 17 Pro uses a fixed-aperture camera system.
A variable aperture could give photographers greater control over depth of field and help the camera adapt to different lighting conditions. That could make the feature particularly interesting for people who regularly shoot portraits, low-light photos or video.
There is an important distinction, however. Recent reports suggest the variable-aperture system could be limited to the iPhone 18 Pro Max rather than appearing on the smaller Pro model.
3. The Pro Max could get a much larger battery
Battery life is another area where Apple’s biggest Pro model could pull ahead.
Reports suggest the iPhone 18 Pro Max could feature a battery of around 5,321mAh. If that figure is accurate, it would represent a substantial increase over the iPhone 17 Pro Max, while the combination of a larger battery and a more efficient processor could further improve endurance.
For heavy users who spend long hours gaming, recording video, navigating or using mobile data, this could be one of the most practical reasons to choose the newer phone.
The smaller iPhone 18 Pro is also expected to receive battery improvements, although the reported capacity is considerably lower than the Pro Max.
4. A smaller Dynamic Island could make the display feel cleaner
The iPhone 18 Pro is not expected to receive a dramatic redesign. Instead, Apple could make a subtle change to the front of the phone by reducing the size of the Dynamic Island.
Recent reports suggest Apple could relocate some Face ID components, allowing the display cutout to become smaller. The overall display sizes are expected to remain similar to the current Pro models.
That means iPhone 17 Pro owners should not expect a completely different-looking phone. The change is more about giving the display a little more usable space while keeping the familiar design.
5. New colours and connectivity upgrades could complete the package
The iPhone 18 Pro lineup is also expected to receive new colour options, with Dark Cherry among the finishes reportedly being considered. Recent leaks have also pointed to additional colours, giving buyers more choice than simply carrying forward the iPhone 17 Pro palette.
Connectivity could see a more important change. Apple is reportedly preparing its next-generation C2 modem for some iPhone 18 models. The move could improve power efficiency and connectivity performance, although the exact availability and capabilities are yet to be confirmed.
Apple is also continuing to develop its AI platform. The company has already previewed the next generation of Apple Intelligence and a more capable Siri, which should make the newer hardware increasingly relevant to AI-focused features.
Should you buy the iPhone 18 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro?
For someone using an older iPhone, the iPhone 18 Pro could be an attractive upgrade. The expected A20 Pro chip, camera improvements, battery enhancements and smaller Dynamic Island could collectively make it a more capable flagship.
For existing iPhone 17 Pro owners, the decision is harder. The 17 Pro already has a powerful A19 Pro chip, three 48MP rear cameras and strong battery performance.
If photography, battery life and having the latest processor are major priorities, waiting for the iPhone 18 Pro makes sense. But if an iPhone 17 Pro is already meeting your needs, the expected changes do not appear large enough to make an immediate upgrade essential.
The biggest reason to wait may ultimately be the camera. If Apple delivers the rumoured variable-aperture system, particularly on the Pro Max, it could become the feature that gives the iPhone 18 Pro generation a more meaningful advantage over its predecessor. Otherwise, the iPhone 18 Pro looks set to be a refinement of the iPhone 17 Pro rather than a complete rethink of Apple’s flagship.
