Securing All India Rank 1 in IIT-JEE is the kind of academic achievement that can define a student’s teenage years. But what happens after the rank, the admission and the attention fade away?
A look at the career paths of IIT-JEE AIR 1 holders from 2000 to 2023 offers an interesting answer.
Across these 24 years, the toppers did not follow one predictable route. Some moved into academic research and teaching. Others built careers at global technology companies, banks and trading firms. One entered the Indian Administrative Service. A few continued their studies or research at major institutions.
Taken together, the list is less a story about where toppers are “supposed” to end up and more a snapshot of how differently exceptional academic performers can build their careers.
From IIT Kanpur and TIFR to global research institutions
Academia and research feature prominently among several AIR 1 holders from the earlier years.
The 2000 IIT-JEE AIR 1 topper went on to become a professor at IIT Kanpur, while the 2005 topper became a professor at TIFR Mumbai.
The 2006 topper is a Reader in Physics at ICTS, continuing the research-oriented pattern visible among some of the rank holders from this period.
International academic and research destinations also appear on the list. The 2010 topper became a researcher at ETH Zurich, while the 2014 topper became a researcher at the University of Penn.
The 2013 AIR 1 holder had recently finished postdoctoral work.
These trajectories stand out because they show that some of the country’s highest-ranked engineering entrance candidates eventually moved deeper into academic and scientific work rather than following a conventional corporate career.
Google, Oracle, OpenAI and Atlassian also feature
Technology companies form another major part of the picture.
The 2001 AIR 1 topper went on to work at Google, while the 2002 topper joined Oracle.
The 2004 topper became a researcher at OpenAI.
A decade later, the 2009 topper was working at Atlassian, while the 2015 topper was associated with Cadence.
The technology connection continues in more recent years as well. The 2016 AIR 1 holder was working at WisdomAI, and the 2019 topper was associated with Samsung.
Rather than concentrating in one company or even one type of technology role, the list shows AIR 1 holders spreading across research organisations, established technology companies and newer businesses.
Finance and trading became another major destination
Some IIT-JEE toppers built careers in banking, financial markets and quantitative trading.
The 2003 AIR 1 topper became a Vice President at Deutsche Bank.
The 2007 topper went on to become a director at Morgan Stanley.
The 2012 topper became a strategist at Tower Research, while the 2021 topper was also working at Tower Research.
Trading firms appear in consecutive years later in the list. The 2017 AIR 1 holder became a trader at Optiver, followed by the 2018 topper, who became a trader at Jane Street.
The presence of Deutsche Bank, Morgan Stanley, Tower Research, Optiver and Jane Street across different batches illustrates how financial markets emerged as one of several career destinations for top-ranked IIT-JEE candidates.
One topper chose the civil services
Not every AIR 1 holder remained within technology, research or finance.
The 2011 IIT-JEE AIR 1 topper became an IAS officer, making public service one of the distinctly different career paths represented in the 24-year list.
It is an important contrast within a group otherwise dominated by academia, technology and finance-related careers.
Entrepreneurship appears too
The 2008 AIR 1 topper went on to become the co-founder of Osfin.
That entry adds entrepreneurship to an already varied set of outcomes, showing that the paths taken after an AIR 1 rank have extended beyond employment and academic research.
The more recent toppers are still earlier in their journeys
For the latest names on the list, the picture naturally looks different because their careers are still at a much earlier stage.
The 2020 AIR 1 topper was pursuing a master’s at MIT.
The 2022 topper was at IISc Bengaluru, while the 2023 AIR 1 holder was studying Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay.
These entries cannot yet be compared directly with people who topped the examination more than a decade earlier. Their inclusion, however, completes a 24-year view stretching from established professors and senior finance professionals to students and researchers still building their careers.

AIR 1 was the starting point, not the destination
What makes the list notable is not that IIT-JEE toppers went on to prestigious institutions or companies. That outcome might not surprise many people.
The more interesting part is the variety.
Within the same 24-year run of AIR 1 holders are professors, researchers, technology professionals, bankers, traders, an entrepreneur, an IAS officer and students still completing higher education.
There is no single career template connecting them.
An AIR 1 rank may place someone at the very top of one of India’s most competitive entrance examinations, but the years that follow can lead in remarkably different directions.
For the IIT-JEE toppers of 2000 through 2023, the rank was only the first line of a much longer story.
