IDBI Bank shares gained as much as 4% on the National Stock Exchange on Tuesday, 14 July, as investors reacted to fresh developments in the long-running divestment process.
The stock opened at ₹85, up from Monday’s closing price of ₹84.07, and continued to advance during the session. It touched an intraday high of ₹87.63 as renewed interest around the proposed stake sale drew market attention.
The movement followed reports that India had received revised financial offers from Canada-based Fairfax Financial and Dubai-headquartered Emirates NBD. The bids relate to the proposed sale of a combined 60.7% stake in IDBI Bank by the central government and Life Insurance Corporation of India.
The latest offers are being evaluated, with a high-level panel of government officials meeting on Monday to review the process. The divestment could reportedly be completed within the next month, although no final bidder or transaction value has been officially announced.
Government and LIC plan to sell 60.7% stake
The central government currently owns 45.48% of IDBI Bank, while LIC holds 49.24%. Together, the two shareholders control nearly 95% of the lender.
Under the proposed transaction, the government and LIC intend to sell a combined 60.7% stake, which would transfer management control of the bank to the successful buyer.
The process has been closely watched because of the size of the proposed acquisition and the profile of the reported bidders. Fairfax Financial has an established presence in India’s financial services sector, while Emirates NBD is one of the major banking groups based in Dubai.
Bloomberg News separately reported that Fairfax had emerged as the frontrunner in the race. However, the bids remain under evaluation, and the government has not publicly confirmed a preferred buyer.
The finance ministry, IDBI Bank, LIC, Fairfax Financial and Emirates NBD had not issued immediate responses to requests for comment cited in the reports.
Revised bids revive a delayed divestment process
The government and LIC began the IDBI Bank disinvestment process in 2022, but the transaction has faced delays.
The sale process was reportedly paused after financial bids submitted in March failed to meet the government’s minimum valuation expectations. Revised bids were subsequently sought, bringing the transaction back into active consideration.
The latest development suggests that negotiations have entered another important stage. However, the final outcome will depend on the evaluation of the revised offers and whether they meet the government’s pricing and regulatory requirements.
Until an official announcement is made, details such as the winning bidder, purchase price and completion timeline remain subject to change.
IDBI Bank shares remain volatile despite recent gains
The latest rise adds to a period of recovery for IDBI Bank shares. The stock has gained 3.35% over the past week and 14.27% during the past month.
Its longer-term performance, however, presents a mixed picture. The shares remain down 17% on a year-to-date basis and have declined 14% over the past year.
Over a broader period, the stock has delivered stronger returns. IDBI Bank shares have risen 51% in three years and 128% over five years.
The contrast reflects the stock’s volatility, with investor sentiment shifting in response to developments in the privatisation process, broader market conditions and expectations around the bank’s future ownership.
For now, the revised bids have brought the IDBI Bank stake sale back into the spotlight. Investors will be watching for an official update on the evaluation process and any announcement identifying the successful bidder.
