India Accelerator (IA), one of India’s leading startup accelerators and venture ecosystem enablers, has unveiled its new 10,000-square-foot Startup Centre in Surat, marking a significant milestone in the development of South Gujarat’s entrepreneurial landscape.

A Founder-First Workspace

The newly opened center situated at Surana Supremus on Udhna-Magdalla Road offers a 280-seat coworking space aimed for startups, MSME’s, and emerging businesses. The space is functional and attractive, with ergonomic workstations, break-out spaces, soundproof pods, and high-speed internet.

The space also includes hybrid conference rooms, podcast studios, and innovation pods, with features that ensure founders have everything from space to demonstrate new products to a space to create content professionally. The modern features (which use IoT-enabled lighting, automatic climate control, touchless access, and AI-managed meeting rooms etc) bring the future of work to life in an efficient environment.

Beyond Infrastructure: Empowering Founders

The Surat Centre of India Accelerator is much more than just a place to have some office space. Their ambition is to incubate 50-60 startups each year, with a program that is structured around business mentoring, legal and accounting assistance, marketing assistance, media visibility, and access to investors.

According to Dharmesh Mehta, Director of the Surat Startup Centre, the goal is to allow founders to focus fully on product building and scaling while the centre takes care of backend operational challenges. Demo days, investor meetups, and networking sessions will also be organized regularly to help startups gain exposure and funding opportunities.

Leadership and Local Support

Ashish Bhatia, Founder and CEO of India Accelerator, along with Rajya Sabha MP Govindbhai Dholakia and former Indian Army Chief General Manoj Mukund Naravane, featured prominently at the inauguration, highlighting both civic respect and national significance for Surat’s new innovation ecosystem.

Bhatia highlighted that India is now the third-largest startup ecosystem in the world, and growth is no longer confined to metro cities. “Surat, with its rich business heritage and growing talent base, deserves a national-level accelerator that can transform local ideas into globally scalable ventures,” he said.

Scaling the IA Network Nationwide

The launch in Surat is part of a larger plan for India Accelerator to expand into India’s Tier-II and Tier-III cities. Recently, IA has also acquired the coworking chain MySOHO and is now spreading its wings in other cities across India as well. India Accelerator plans to open more than 45 hubs in 30 cities, covering over 6 lakh square feet and having approximately 12,500 seats under IA Spaces brand.

This expansion aligns with IA’s mission to decentralize innovation and ensure that startup founders across India have access to high-quality workspaces, mentorship, and funding without relocating to larger cities.

Why Surat, and Why Now

Surat is recognized mainly for its strength of manufacturing and commerce, particularly in textiles, diamonds, and chemicals, which serves as a fertile ground for new-age tech-driven companies. In the last decade, there is a gradual growth in the number of startups led by youth in logistics, fintech, e-commerce, and design.

Gujarat’s supportive policies, such as the Student Startup Innovation Policy (SSIP) and the i-Hub incubation framework, have already laid the groundwork for student and early-stage ventures. With India Accelerator now entering the ecosystem, founders in Surat will gain structured access to venture capital, mentorship, and global exposure.

Turning Potential into Performance

The Surat Startup Centre is a big step forward for innovation in the region, but the long-term impact will rely on sustainable quality mentorship, ongoing engagement from investors, and strong ties to the industry. Major challenges include an ongoing pipeline for seed and growth-stage funding (including angel and VC funding), integration of startups with local industry, and retaining talent that often moves to metros, such as Bengaluru or Mumbai. But in its unique blend of workspace, funding programs and community-driven events, India Accelerator is working to establish itself as a key driver for sustainable entrepreneurship development in Gujarat.

Spreading the Startup Spirit Across India

India Accelerator’s expansion to Surat marks the next step in the evolution of startups in India, which will exist outside the normal metro center. By focusing on infrastructure, mentorship, and access to capital, the new centre could help develop tangible success stories from South Gujarat’s entrepreneurial potential. If this model delivers results, Surat could soon represent a template for other regional cities in India, for how they may each eventually develop into an innovative startup ecosystem that also drives jobs and equitable growth in the future.
