Google CEO Sundar Pichai met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the national capital on Wednesday, on the sidelines of the India AI Impact Summit 2026 being held at Bharat Mandapam.

Pichai is in India for the summit and is scheduled to deliver a keynote address on February 20th. The meeting comes as the multi-day event draws policymakers, technology leaders, researchers, innovators and civil society representatives for discussions on how AI should be governed and how its benefits can be made broader and safer.

A warm welcome and a high-profile stop

Soon after arriving in India, Pichai posted on X about being “back in India for the AI Impact Summit,” adding that the welcome was warm. India TV also reported that he thanked people for the warm welcome after touching down in Delhi.

While details of the Modi–Pichai conversation were not spelled out, the optics were clear: as AI policy debates get louder globally, India is positioning itself as a convening power, particularly for countries in the Global South, by hosting a summit that places “governance, safety and inclusive development” at the centre.

The India AI Impact Summit 2026

The India AI Impact Summit 2026 is being held from February 16 to February 20 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi. India TV described it as the first global AI summit of this scale to be hosted in the Global South.

More than 110 countries and around 30 international organisations, with senior-level representation that includes Heads of State/Government and ministers are participating in the summit. It is focused on strengthening global cooperation on AI governance, safety and the broader societal impact.

The three-word frame: People, Planet, Progress

The event is guided by three “sutras” or foundational pillars, People, Planet, and Progress, with a stated emphasis on human-centric AI, environmental sustainability, and inclusive economic and technological advancement.

On the big stage: safety guardrails, attribution and a warning from Wikipedia

Away from the photo-ops, the summit’s content is being shaped by a set of recurring anxieties: misinformation, safety failures, job disruption, and the speed at which AI systems are moving from “tools” to autonomous agents.

DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis warning that the world is entering an “agentic era” and that guardrails will be essential, flagging risks from bad actors and geopolitical misuse, as well as emerging bio and cyber threats.

Jobs will change: what leaders are saying

On the question many people actually care about, employment, Experts believe, AI will make certain skills more valuable because people can do the same work faster, while warning that some professions may decline and that it’s hard to predict which ones.

Why the Narendra Modi-Sundar Pichai moment is being watched

It’s the convergence: a global AI summit hosted in New Delhi; a meeting between India’s Prime Minister and Google’s CEO; and a conference narrative that keeps circling back to the same pressure points, safety, attribution, jobs, and inclusion.

If the AI decade is going to be defined by rules as much as it is by products, then summits like this, especially with participation from over 110 countries, are where the guardrails begin to take shape.
