Reliance Jio has launched JioPC as a standalone cloud computing service for internet users across India. Unlike its earlier availability, which was limited to JioHome broadband subscribers, JioPC can now be accessed without a JioHome connection.
The service is designed to give older computers access to modern computing capabilities by moving much of the processing work to the cloud. Instead of requiring users to upgrade their computer hardware, JioPC streams a virtual desktop to an existing device through an internet connection.
JioPC brings cloud computing to older computers
At its core, JioPC is a cloud-based virtual computer. Users can access a desktop environment through their existing computer, including devices that are up to eight years old, without making hardware changes.
The idea is to shift demanding computing tasks away from the physical machine and onto Jio’s cloud infrastructure. This means a computer with relatively modest hardware can access resources that would otherwise require a more capable device.
JioPC also supports access through TVs when used with a Jio set-top box, giving users another way to access the cloud-based desktop experience.
How does JioPC work?
JioPC essentially turns an existing screen and internet-connected device into a gateway to a cloud computer. The processing and storage resources are provided through the service rather than relying entirely on the user’s local hardware.
This approach can be particularly relevant for people using older computers that are still functional but no longer capable of handling newer applications efficiently. Instead of replacing such devices, users can access a more capable virtual computing environment through JioPC.
The service also supports AI-powered applications by using cloud-based processing. This allows older, lower-specification computers to access workloads that may otherwise require newer hardware.
JioPC plans offer up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage
Jio has introduced two JioPC plans with different levels of computing resources.
The standard JioPC plan comes with four virtual CPUs, 8GB of RAM and 500GB of storage. It starts at ₹1,000 for two months.
The higher JioPC Ultra plan provides eight virtual CPUs, 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. This plan starts at ₹1,200.
Users can also choose longer-duration options, including five-month and 10+2 month packages. Depending on the package, the effective daily cost can go as low as ₹11.
Both plans run on Ubuntu/Linux and come with LibreOffice and browser-based applications. However, software designed specifically for Windows may not run natively on the platform.
Why JioPC could matter for users with ageing devices
One of the main attractions of JioPC is that it does not require users to immediately purchase a new computer to access more modern computing resources.
Older computers remain common in homes, educational institutions and small businesses. For users whose existing machines are still physically usable but lack the processing power or storage needed for newer applications, a cloud-based approach could provide an alternative to a hardware upgrade.
The ability to access AI-powered applications is another important part of JioPC’s proposition. As AI-based software becomes more common, computing requirements can increase. By handling processing through the cloud, JioPC is designed to make these capabilities available even on older devices.
Who can use JioPC?
The nationwide availability makes JioPC accessible to internet users beyond the company’s JioHome broadband customer base.
Students, households, small businesses and users with ageing computers could find the service useful when they need access to a more capable computing environment without replacing their existing hardware.
However, the experience ultimately depends on having a stable internet connection because the virtual desktop and its computing resources are delivered through the cloud.
JioPC takes a different approach to upgrading a computer
Rather than asking users to replace an old computer with a new one, JioPC takes a cloud-first approach. The physical device remains the access point, while computing resources are provided remotely.
With its nationwide rollout, Jio is positioning JioPC as a way to bring modern and AI-ready computing capabilities to existing devices. Its appeal will depend on how well the cloud desktop performs for everyday tasks and whether users find the subscription plans a practical alternative to buying new hardware.
