US-based venture capital firm General Catalyst has unveiled plans to invest $5 billion in India over the next five years, marking one of its largest regional commitments to date. The announcement was made during the India AI Impact Summit held in New Delhi, underscoring the firm’s growing focus on the country’s technology and innovation landscape.

The proposed investment will span multiple high-impact sectors, reflecting the firm’s long-term confidence in India’s growth trajectory and entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Focus on AI, Healthcare and Strategic Technologies

Speaking at the summit, Chief Executive Officer Hemant Taneja said the capital will be deployed across artificial intelligence, healthcare, fintech, defence and industrial technology. The diversified allocation signals a broad-based strategy aimed at supporting both emerging and established areas of innovation.

In addition to backing existing startups, the firm intends to actively support new company creation efforts in India. This approach suggests a deeper engagement with the local ecosystem, moving beyond passive investment to hands-on collaboration in building new ventures.

The emphasis on artificial intelligence comes at a time when India is accelerating efforts to strengthen its digital capabilities and foster homegrown innovation in advanced technologies.

Expansion Follows Venture Highway Acquisition

The $5 billion commitment represents a significant expansion of General Catalyst’s presence in India. The firm formally entered the Indian market in 2023 through the acquisition of Venture Highway, an early-stage venture capital firm known for backing startups at seed and initial growth phases.

Before the acquisition, Venture Highway had built a track record of supporting Indian startups during their formative stages. The move allowed General Catalyst to establish a direct footprint in the country and tap into a pipeline of early-stage opportunities.

Since then, the firm has invested in Indian companies across both early and growth stages through its global funds, integrating its India strategy into its broader international investment framework.

Growing Portfolio of Indian Startups

General Catalyst’s current Indian portfolio includes companies such as Zepto, PB Health, Raphe mPhibr and Jeh Aerospace. These investments reflect the firm’s interest in consumer technology, healthcare innovation, defence-related solutions and aerospace manufacturing.

By maintaining exposure across diverse sectors, the firm has positioned itself to participate in both digital-first businesses and deep-tech ventures with long-term industrial impact.

India’s Digital Infrastructure Drives Confidence

According to comments reported by The Economic Times, Taneja highlighted India’s digital public infrastructure and deep talent base as central factors behind the firm’s expanded commitment. India’s digital ecosystem, built around scalable platforms and widespread connectivity, has created fertile ground for technology-led businesses.

He also indicated that the firm plans to work closely with founders and institutions while building companies in the region. This collaborative approach points to sustained engagement with local stakeholders rather than a purely financial relationship.

The scale of the proposed investment signals confidence in India’s ability to generate globally competitive companies across sectors such as AI, fintech and advanced manufacturing.

Part of Broader Capital Momentum in India

The announcement comes amid a broader wave of capital commitments to India’s technology and infrastructure sectors. In recent months, both global investors and domestic groups have outlined significant investment plans aimed at tapping into the country’s expanding digital economy and industrial base.

General Catalyst’s $5 billion plan adds to this momentum, reinforcing India’s position as a key destination for long-term venture capital and innovation-driven investment.

With a multi-sector strategy and an emphasis on company creation, the firm’s expanded commitment marks a new phase in its India journey. Over the next five years, the deployment of this capital is expected to further integrate India into the firm’s global investment landscape while strengthening the country’s startup ecosystem.
