Apple could be preparing to break from its long-running iPhone launch tradition by delaying the standard iPhone 18 until early 2027, while keeping its premium models on schedule for a fall 2026 debut.
Reports indicate that Apple plans to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September, while the regular iPhone 18 would arrive several months later. If the plan goes ahead, it would mark a major change to the company’s recent approach of releasing its main iPhone models together in the fall.
A familiar iPhone launch pattern could be split
For years, Apple’s flagship iPhone launches have centered around the September period. The company has typically introduced multiple models together, giving customers a choice between standard and Pro versions during the same upgrade cycle.
The rumored iPhone 18 strategy would change that pattern. The higher-priced iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max are expected to arrive in fall 2026, while the standard iPhone 18 is reportedly being pushed to spring 2027. Earlier reports have also pointed to the iPhone 18e and a second-generation iPhone Air arriving during the later launch window.
The possibility of a split launch has been reported for months, but recent comments from Apple’s supply chain have added further weight to the reports. The change, however, has not been officially announced by Apple.

Memory shortages add pressure to Apple’s plans
Component availability appears to be one of the factors behind the reported change. The smartphone industry is dealing with tighter supplies of memory and other chips, creating challenges for manufacturers as they manage production across different products.
Reports cited comments from Apple supplier executives about the impact of memory and chip shortages on smartphone production and shipment schedules. With manufacturers facing limited component availability, higher-priced devices can become a priority because of their stronger margins.
That situation could make a staggered iPhone launch more practical for Apple. Rather than releasing the entire lineup at once, the company could concentrate available manufacturing resources on its premium models first and introduce the standard versions later.
The approach would also spread Apple’s major iPhone releases across two periods instead of placing the entire lineup into a single fall launch window.
Pro models expected to lead the 2026 lineup
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to remain part of Apple’s fall 2026 launch plans. The premium models are also expected to share the stage with Apple’s first foldable iPhone, which has been widely rumored as part of the company’s upcoming high-end lineup.
The standard iPhone 18, meanwhile, is expected to be held for spring 2027. MacRumors currently lists the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e for that period, with a possible second-generation iPhone Air also included in the later lineup.
This would mean customers looking for a standard iPhone upgrade would not have a new regular model to choose from during Apple’s traditional fall launch period.
A different strategy for Apple’s growing lineup
The reported schedule could give Apple greater flexibility as its iPhone family expands. Instead of introducing every new model at once, Apple could divide the lineup into premium and more affordable releases.
The strategy would also give the company more time to manage production and component availability. Previous reports have connected the delayed standard model to rising memory and storage chip costs, as well as broader supply-chain pressures.
For consumers, however, the change could make Apple’s annual iPhone cycle less straightforward. Buyers who normally wait for September to choose between a standard and Pro model may instead have to decide whether to purchase a premium device or wait until 2027 for the regular iPhone 18.
Apple’s traditional iPhone cycle faces a major test
Apple has not officially confirmed the reported split launch schedule, so the final release plans could still change. For now, multiple reports and supply-chain indications point toward a fall 2026 launch focused on the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max and foldable model, followed by the standard iPhone 18 and other lower-priced models in spring 2027.
If Apple follows through, the change would represent one of the biggest adjustments to its recent iPhone release strategy. Instead of making the entire new-generation lineup available in September, the company would spread its launches across two seasons, putting its premium devices first and its standard models later.
