Flipkart’s Bold Bite: Crashing the Food Delivery Party Against Zomato & Swiggy

Share

Flipkart’s gearing up for a tasty new fight in India’s food delivery scene. Reports say the Walmart-owned giant wants to take on Zomato and Swiggy head-on, starting with a test run in Bengaluru.

Pilot Launch Details

Word is, Flipkart’s eyeing a pilot in Bengaluru around May or June this year, with bigger plans possibly rolling out late 2026 or early 2027 if it clicks. They’re mulling over building their own app or jumping on the ONDC bandwagon, the government’s digital commerce network that others like Ola flirted with before. It’s not their first stab at this; a couple years back, they poked around the idea but it fizzled out.

Why Now?

Flipkart’s already killing it in quick commerce with their “Minutes” service, running over 800 dark stores and expanding fast. This food push fits right in, especially as they’re prepping for an IPO that could use some fresh growth stories. The market’s exploding too, India’s $9 billion food delivery biz is tipped to hit $24 billion by 2030, and Zomato with Swiggy have been posting solid order jumps lately.

The Big Challenge

Zomato and Swiggy basically own the turf right now, so Flipkart’s gotta find a hook, like leveraging their logistics muscle or café-style quick bites. News of this shook up stocks a bit, with Swiggy dipping on competition fears. If they pull it off, though, it could shake things up big time for late-night biryani runs and office lunch orders. Fingers crossed for us hungry folks in Bhopal, we might see Flipkart delivery bikes zipping around soon enough.
