The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to arrive in September 2026, with reports pointing to changes across the processor, camera system, connectivity and design. At the same time, possible price increases, particularly on higher-storage variants, could make the current iPhone 17 worth a closer look for buyers who need a phone now.

There is an important caveat. Apple has not officially confirmed the launch date, specifications, colours or pricing for the iPhone 18 series. The information surrounding the upcoming devices remains based on leaks and industry reports.

iPhone 18 Pro could focus heavily on performance

One of the biggest expected changes sits inside the phone.

The iPhone 18 Pro series is tipped to use Apple’s A20 Pro chip, reportedly manufactured using a 2nm process. The processor is expected to bring improvements in both performance and power efficiency.

Reports also point to 12GB of RAM for the Pro models, suggesting that Apple could be preparing a meaningful internal upgrade rather than relying only on cosmetic changes to separate the next generation from the current lineup.

The Pro models are also expected to use Apple’s C2 modem, with potential improvements to connectivity and wireless performance.

The camera may be the upgrade worth watching

For buyers who regularly use their iPhone as a camera, the most interesting reported change may not be the processor.

The iPhone 18 Pro could feature a variable-aperture main camera. Unlike a fixed-aperture setup, the reported system would offer greater control over how much light enters the lens.

That could improve low-light photography while giving users more flexibility over depth-of-field effects. If the feature makes it into the final device, it could become one of the more noticeable everyday differences between the generations.

Design changes, meanwhile, appear likely to be more restrained. The Pro models are expected to retain Apple’s familiar premium design while receiving refinements around the frame, rear camera area and front display.

Burgundy, purple and brown are reportedly in consideration

Apple could also refresh the colour palette for the new Pro lineup.

Burgundy, purple and brown have been mentioned among the possible options. None of those colours has been confirmed by Apple, so they remain firmly in the rumour category for now.

For buyers deciding whether to wait, however, colour options are likely to be a smaller consideration than what may happen to pricing.

Waiting for iPhone 18 Pro could mean paying more

Pricing remains one of the biggest unknowns surrounding the upcoming models.

Reports suggest higher-storage configurations could become more expensive, with possible increases of $150 to $200 for versions offering 512GB, 1TB and larger capacities.

For India, reported estimates point to potential increases ranging from roughly ₹5,000 to ₹20,000, depending on the model and storage configuration. Those figures have not been confirmed by Apple.

That possibility changes the buying calculation.

Waiting for the iPhone 18 Pro could bring access to the A20 Pro chip, additional RAM, a potentially more versatile camera and other refinements. But if the reported price increases materialise, those improvements may come with a noticeably higher entry cost, particularly for buyers looking at larger storage options.

So, should you buy the iPhone 17 now?

For someone who needs a new iPhone immediately, waiting is not automatically the better choice.

The iPhone 17 already offers an A19 chip, a 120Hz display and improved cameras, leaving it positioned as a capable current-generation option.

The argument for waiting becomes stronger for buyers who specifically want the newest hardware and are comfortable postponing their purchase until Apple reveals what the iPhone 18 Pro series actually offers.

There is also a distinction worth keeping in mind. Reports currently point to the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max arriving in September 2026, while the standard iPhone 18 could follow a different release schedule. No confirmed timing for the standard model is provided.

For now, the choice comes down to priorities rather than a clear winner.

Buyers who need a phone today already have the iPhone 17 and its established feature set. Those willing to wait could get a more powerful Pro model with a potentially significant camera upgrade, but they may also have to absorb a higher price.

Until Apple makes its announcement, the reported variable-aperture camera, A20 Pro processor, 12GB RAM, new colours and potential price increases should all be treated as expectations rather than confirmed specifications.
