Hayden Panettiere, the actress whose career stretched from childhood commercials to leading television roles in Heroes and Nashville, has died at the age of 36.

Her representative confirmed her death, while her father, Skip Panettiere, shared a statement describing his daughter as “an incredible light and a force of nature” who brought joy both to those who knew her personally and to audiences who watched her work. The family asked for privacy while processing the loss.

The circumstances surrounding Panettiere’s death have not been disclosed. Her representative said an investigation was ongoing.

However, In an old interview, Hayden Panetierre did accept that she was fighting alcoholism and postpartum depression.

“I didn’t know where the alcoholism was ending and the postpartum was beginning,” was exactly what Panetierre said. “And I ran myself pretty ragged.”

The news came only days before Panettiere would have celebrated her 37th birthday on Aug. 21.

A career that started before she could talk

Panettiere’s connection with the entertainment industry began unusually early. She once recalled that she was only 11 months old when she appeared in her first commercial, for a Playskool toy train. She joked years later that she was not sure it qualified as acting because she had no lines and was simply playing.

That childhood beginning grew into a career covering television drama, animation, family films, horror and music-driven television.

Born Aug. 21, 1989, Panettiere was raised in Palisades, New York. Her early television work included appearances in One Life to Live, Guiding Light and Malcolm in the Middle, while her film credits included The Object of My Affection, A Bug’s Life and Message in a Bottle.

She was still a child when she played Sheryl Yoast in the 2000 football drama Remember the Titans, a production she would later remember with particular affection. The performance also earned her a Young Artist Award.

Claire Bennet made her a television star

Panettiere’s major television breakthrough arrived in 2006 when she was cast as Claire Bennet in NBC’s Heroes.

Claire, a high-school cheerleader with the ability to rapidly heal from injuries, became one of the science-fiction drama’s most recognizable characters. Panettiere remained with the series for four seasons.

The role brought her a much wider audience and helped establish her beyond the child-star label that had followed much of her early career.

She later moved into another defining part, Juliette Barnes in Nashville. Panettiere played the ambitious country music star from 2012 to 2018, taking on a character whose professional success was often complicated by turmoil in her private life.

Her work on Nashville brought nominations from the Golden Globes, Critics Choice Television Awards, Teen Choice Awards and People’s Choice Awards.

From Nashville to Kirby Reed in Scream

Panettiere also developed a lasting connection with horror audiences through the Scream franchise.

She first appeared as Kirby Reed in 2011’s Scream 4. More than a decade later, she returned to the character in the franchise’s sixth installment, released in 2023. Her other film work included I Love You, Beth Cooper, Remember the Titans, Raising Helen and Ice Princess.
That mix of roles gave Panettiere a career that resisted a single label. Viewers who first encountered her as a child performer could later know her as a superhero drama regular, a country music star on television or a horror franchise survivor.

Her final year also brought a deeply personal memoir

In May, Panettiere released This Is Me: A Reckoning, a memoir examining her experience of growing up in the spotlight and the difficulties she faced as an adult.

The book addressed postpartum depression, addiction and recovery, trauma, domestic abuse and loss.

Panettiere had spoken publicly about some of those experiences before the memoir. She discussed the overlap between her own struggles and storylines given to Juliette Barnes on Nashville, including alcoholism and postpartum depression.

Her willingness to discuss those periods became another part of her public life, separate from the carefully constructed characters audiences had watched since she was a child.

Family, loss and life away from the screen

Panettiere had one daughter, Kaya, born in 2014, with former heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko.

She had also experienced a major family loss in recent years. Her younger brother, Jansen Panettiere, died in February 2023 at the age of 28. His family said at the time that he died from cardiomegaly, or an enlarged heart, combined with aortic valve complications.

Hayden later spoke publicly about how deeply his death affected her, saying she would always be heartbroken by the loss.

Advocacy beyond acting

Panettiere’s public work was not limited to entertainment.

She supported causes including mental health awareness, animal rights and environmental issues. In 2011, her advocacy for Washington, DC voting rights and statehood was recognized when city officials marked Sept. 16 as “Hayden Panettiere Day.”

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, she also supported the Ukrainian people and launched a relief fund in 2022 aimed at helping provide medical supplies and protective equipment. Panettiere said she could not remain on the sidelines while people in a country where she had friends and family were suffering.

A career that crossed generations and genres

Panettiere spent almost her entire life in front of audiences.

Her career began with a commercial before her first birthday, moved through soap operas and childhood film roles, and eventually produced three characters closely associated with distinct periods of popular television and film: Claire Bennet in Heroes, Juliette Barnes in Nashville and Kirby Reed in Scream.

At 36, she leaves behind work that reached audiences across several generations, from viewers who first saw her in Remember the Titans to those who followed her return to the Scream franchise more than two decades later.

For now, no further details about the circumstances of her death have been made public, and her family has requested privacy.
