LeBron James is turning a growing interest in golf into a regular YouTube series, and he has started it with a reunion that basketball fans will immediately recognize.
He recently started a YouTube channel dedicated to golf and in his first episode, he has been able to unite some players from the 2016 squad of the Cleveland Cavaliers to play a game of 3-on-3 scramble in Scotland. He intends to publish a golf video every month, showing his development in the game.
For the first match, James teamed up with Richard Jefferson and Kevin Love. On the other side were J.R. Smith, Channing Frye and Tristan Thompson.
The result was less about polished tournament golf and more about something that could prove useful for the series: six former teammates competing, talking and giving each other a hard time while figuring out who could deliver when it mattered.
A Cavaliers reunion built around golf
The Scotland episode does not present James as someone suddenly trying to look like a professional golfer. In fact, the rougher moments are part of what gives the video its character.
James and Love were shown still finding their way around the game, while Smith stood out as the most experienced golfer in the group. Even with that advantage, Smith remained demanding of his own shots.
Frye, meanwhile, emerged as an unexpected highlight with his putting. At one point, he turned one of the most recognizable lines from the Cavaliers’ championship era back on James, using “Cleveland, this is for you!” as part of the on-course banter.
That exchange captures what could separate James’ project from a straightforward celebrity golf channel. The golf provides the competition, but the history between the players supplies much of the personality.
These are former teammates with years of shared experiences, which means the conversation does not have to be manufactured simply to fill time between shots.
The Youtube series has more than golf to work with
The first episode also moved beyond missed shots, putting contests and friendly trash talk.
Smith and Jefferson discussed retirement and the challenge of adjusting to life after professional basketball. Their conversation touched on the difficulty athletes can face when the career that shaped much of their adult lives is suddenly no longer their everyday reality.
That gives the series another direction to explore.
Golf may be the activity bringing everyone together, but conversations involving former teammates could give viewers something more personal than a conventional sports challenge video. The format creates room for competition and humor while also allowing discussions that might not happen in a formal interview setting.
Also, for James, the step towards YouTube golf has not come completely out of nowhere. He has already openly mentioned that he watches golf-related videos on the website and even participated in an episode of Bob Does Sports in early 2026. The channel will allow him to showcase his own participation in the sport instead of being a guest there.
One video a month gives James’ golf journey a longer runway
The planned monthly schedule is one of the more interesting parts of the launch.
Instead of treating the Scotland scramble as a one-off celebrity event, James intends to make golf a recurring part of his YouTube presence. A video every month gives the series time to show whether his game develops and, just as importantly, who joins him along the way.
From this first appearance, it seems that this channel can be interesting without having top level golfers. What makes it exciting is the relationship between the players, the competition, and the unpredictability that results when skilled players try a sport which they have not dedicated their lives to playing.
For now, the first episode has established the formula: LeBron James, golf, former Cavaliers teammates and enough competitive history between them to make every good shot, bad putt and piece of trash talk feel personal.
If the monthly schedule continues as planned, viewers will get to see whether James’ enthusiasm for golf develops into something more polished over time. The bigger question may be whether the conversations and chemistry around the game become just as important as the score itself.
