Bengaluru-based Sarla Aviation has begun ground testing of its half-scale electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) demonstrator, dubbed SYLLA (SYL-X1), at the company’s test facility in the city.
The demonstrator carries a 7.5-metre wingspan, which the company describes as the largest and most advanced private eVTOL demonstrator of its kind currently under development in India.
Sarla Aviation said the programme moved from development into testing in approximately nine months, and that it reached this stage “at a fraction of the capital” typically required for comparable global efforts.
The Significance Of The Test
The start of ground testing marks a shift from “digital concepts and laboratory-scale experimentation” toward aircraft-scale validation.
Sarla Aviation describes SYL-X1 as a functional sub-scale aircraft built to validate structural behaviour, propulsion integration, and system-level safety architecture at a meaningful scale.
It is also positioned as a bridge to Sarla Aviation’s full-scale 15-metre wingspan aircraft, with the demonstrator designed “with certification intent from the outset,” the company said .
Building the company alongside the aircraft
In a public post shared by Adrian Schmidt, Co-Founder & CEO, Sarla Aviation framed the milestone as the result of parallel execution, engineering the demonstrator while scaling the organisation behind it.
The CEO highlighted the pace of development and credited the engineering, integration and flight-test teams for delivering in a challenging environment, describing “purpose” as the company’s biggest advantage.

The press release points to rapid internal scaling during the same development cycle, expanding “from two founders to a team of nearly 70 engineers”, while navigating an “still-emerging” aerospace supply chain and building a certification-aligned flight-test ecosystem .
What Sarla Aviation says comes next?
Sarla Aviation’s technology roadmap targets “helicopter-class mission endurance”, while aiming to reduce cost and operational complexity through electric propulsion and integrated systems design. The company argues that long-term success in advanced air mobility will be defined by the ability to execute through certification, production and sustained operations, not early announcements.

Commenting on the testing milestone, Rakesh Gaonkar, Co-Founder & CTO, said the focus is on durability and certification readiness: “Our focus has never been on being first, but on building to last… We are building something India can be proud of: a platform that can be certified, produced, and safely operated, designed and owned entirely in India,” the release quoted him as saying .
Company background
Sarla Aviation is headquartered in Bengaluru and is named in honour of Sarla Thukral, described as India’s first woman pilot. The company was founded in 2023 by “the ex-Lilium duo” Rakesh Gaonkar and Adrian Schmidt . Its flagship programme, according to the company, is a six-seater electric flying taxi aimed at reducing commute times in congested cities including Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi and Pune.
