India’s Unified Payments Interface reached a major milestone in December 2025 by processing 21.63 billion transactions, marking the highest monthly transaction count since the platform was launched. The figure represents a 29 percent year-on-year increase in transaction volumes, according to data released by the National Payments Corporation of India. This record performance highlights the continued expansion of digital payments across the country and reinforces UPI’s position as a core component of India’s financial infrastructure.
In value terms, transactions routed through UPI during the month amounted to Rs 27.97 lakh crore, reflecting the growing reliance on the platform for both low-value daily payments and high-frequency commercial transactions.
Daily Activity Reflects Massive Scale
The December data underlines the sheer scale at which UPI now operates. On average, the platform handled 698 million transactions every day throughout the month. The average daily transaction value stood at Rs 90,217 crore, indicating consistent and widespread usage across different consumer segments and payment needs.
This level of daily activity points to UPI’s deep integration into routine financial behavior, where digital payments are no longer limited to select use cases but have become a default option for millions of users.

Month-on-Month Growth Remains Strong
Compared to November 2025, UPI recorded a notable increase in both transaction volumes and value. In November, the platform processed 20.47 billion transactions with a total value of Rs 26.32 lakh crore. December not only surpassed these numbers but also set a new all-time high in monthly transaction count.
November had already delivered robust growth, reporting a 32 percent year-on-year increase in volumes and a 22 percent rise in transaction value. December’s performance built on this momentum, pushing overall usage to unprecedented levels and surpassing all previous months in terms of transaction volume.
Everyday Payments Drive Adoption
UPI’s sustained growth has been driven largely by its increasing use for everyday consumer and merchant payments. Data from November showed higher activity across essential categories such as groceries, food services, telecom recharges, and fuel purchases. This trend reflects deeper penetration of digital payments into routine spending habits and highlights how UPI has become central to daily commerce.
The continued expansion across these categories suggests that users are not only adopting digital payments but also relying on UPI for frequent, low-friction transactions that were traditionally cash-based.
Merchant Acceptance Fuels Momentum
Merchant adoption has played a key role in supporting UPI’s scale-up. Small retailers, service providers, and large merchants alike continue to accept UPI payments due to ease of use, quick settlement, and broad consumer familiarity. This widespread acceptance has enabled UPI to handle increasing volumes without disruption, even during periods of peak activity.
The platform’s ability to support high transaction volumes while maintaining reliability has further strengthened trust among users and businesses.
Competitive App Ecosystem Continues to Evolve
App-wise transaction data for December has not yet been released. However, figures from November provide insight into the competitive landscape. PhonePe continued to strengthen its leadership position during that month, while Google Pay experienced a marginal dip in market share. Paytm remained the third-largest UPI application by transaction volumes.
At the same time, smaller apps including Navi, super.money, Cred, and BHIM accounted for a growing share of overall transactions. Their rising contribution indicates a gradual diversification within the UPI ecosystem, offering users more choices while maintaining interoperability across platforms.
A Defining Month for Digital Payments
December 2025 stands out as a defining month for UPI, not only because of the record transaction count but also due to the consistency of growth across volumes, value, and daily usage. The data reflects how deeply digital payments are embedded in India’s economic activity and how UPI continues to scale as a national payment backbone.
As transaction volumes continue to climb, UPI’s performance in December underscores its role in shaping the future of cashless payments in India, supported by broad consumer adoption, expanding merchant acceptance, and a competitive app ecosystem.
