The iconic Plaza Hotel in New York City is set to close for at least four years beginning January 2027, as management prepares to restore the historic building’s landmark-protected exterior.

The closure, announced on October 14, will affect hotel operations, with uncertainty surrounding 378 union workers, 181 condominium residences and weddings already booked at the Manhattan landmark.

Why Is New York’s Plaza Hotel Closing?

The 18-story luxury hotel, located at Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, requires extensive repairs to its historic façade.

Management said the restoration is necessary to meet preservation requirements and ensure guest safety. However, the project cost, detailed construction plans and exact reopening date have not been disclosed.

The hotel could remain closed until at least 2031.

Plaza Hotel Closure Disrupts May 2027 Wedding

Among those affected is Christine Carney, who had planned to marry at the Plaza on May 1, 2027.

Carney told ABC7 New York that she had dreamed of a Plaza wedding since childhood and had been planning the event since April 2025.

After learning about the closure, she contacted the hotel’s concierge, who confirmed the news.

Her wedding planner, Alyssa Pettinato, said finding another venue could also require changing the wedding date and rearranging existing vendor bookings.

What Happens to 378 Plaza Hotel Employees?

The Hotel & Gaming Trades Council said its 378 union members working at the Plaza will be entitled to return to their positions at the same pay when the hotel reopens.

The union also plans to help affected employees find alternative employment during the shutdown.

Meanwhile, uncertainty remains over the building’s 181 condominium units, as operator Fairmont Hotels & Resorts has not clarified whether residents must relocate during construction.

Will the Plaza Hotel’s Palm Court Also Close?

The shutdown is also expected to affect the hotel’s famous Palm Court and event spaces.

Staff members reportedly told The New York Times that the Palm Court and event rooms would close during restoration work.

The Plaza is particularly popular for luxury weddings, afternoon tea and special celebrations.

A Historic New York City Landmark

Opened on October 1, 1907, the Plaza Hotel was designed by architect Henry Janeway Hardenbergh.

The Manhattan landmark features 282 hotel guestrooms, including 102 suites, alongside 181 condominium residences.

Known worldwide for its appearances in Home Alone 2: Lost in New York and Bride Wars, the hotel has also hosted numerous prominent guests throughout its history.

Although the restoration is intended to preserve one of New York City’s most recognizable buildings, its prolonged closure leaves employees, residents and event organizers facing significant uncertainty.
