Apple is quietly accelerating its artificial intelligence ambitions through a strategic collaboration with AI research firm Anthropic. According to Bloomberg reports, the two companies are co-developing a new AI-powered coding assistant designed to work within Xcode, Apple’s flagship development environment for building apps across iOS, macOS, watchOS, and TVOS.
The tool, which remains under internal testing at Apple, integrates Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet model to help developers write, edit, and test code more efficiently. While still in early stages, this partnership signals Apple’s renewed focus on catching up in the AI race, especially in developer tools, where rivals like Microsoft and Google have made major strides.
What the AI Tool Anthropic Does?
At its core, the Apple-Anthropic tool aims to be a “vibe-coding” platform, a term associated with AI systems that support more intuitive and conversational coding workflows. Developers will be able to interact with the tool through a chat interface within Xcode, asking it to perform tasks such as generating boilerplate code, testing user interfaces, or identifying and resolving bugs.
This system leverages Claude Sonnet’s strengths in code understanding and generation, a capability that has already made it popular among developers using third-party AI coding tools like Cursor and Windsurf. Apple reportedly plans to test the tool internally before making any decisions on a wider release.
A Larger AI Strategy Taking Shape
While Apple has often been seen as lagging behind in the AI arms race, this collaboration is part of a broader network of efforts. The company already works with OpenAI to power some of its Apple Intelligence features and has indicated interest in incorporating Google’s Gemini as an alternative AI model. By partnering with Anthropic, Apple adds another high-profile name to its growing list of AI collaborators.
The move also comes at a time when AI-generated code is becoming increasingly common in the industry. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella recently acknowledged that a significant portion of code in some Microsoft repositories is already AI-generated. Meanwhile, OpenAI is reportedly exploring acquisitions, including a possible $3 billion deal to buy coding tool Windsurf.
Apple Is Carefully Evaluating
Apple has not confirmed whether this AI coding assistant will be rolled out publicly, and Anthropic has declined to comment on the partnership. The current internal rollout suggests Apple is carefully evaluating both the technical capabilities and developer experience before taking the next step.
This initiative follows Apple’s earlier announcement at WWDC 2024 of “Swift Assist,” another AI tool aimed at helping developers write code more efficiently. However, that tool has yet to launch, and its integration with the Claude-powered assistant remains unclear.
Apple also recently reshuffled its AI leadership structure, moving oversight of Siri development from AI chief John Giannandrea to Mike Rockwell, known for heading the Vision Pro team. The delay in upgrading Siri, once expected by late 2024, reflects the company’s cautious approach to deploying advanced AI features.
Measured Approach
The partnership between Apple and Anthropic represents a significant development in Apple’s AI strategy particularly in tools that directly impact the developer ecosystem. While competitors like GitHub Copilot and Gemini Code continue to gain ground, Apple’s approach appears more measured and privacy-conscious, in keeping with its brand philosophy.
Whether this tool will become publicly available remains to be seen, but its existence underscores the rising role of generative AI in shaping the future of software development.
