Smart grid solutions startup Kimbal Private Limited has secured $22 million, or about ₹210 crore, in a Series B funding round led by GEF Capital Partners, with participation from existing investor Niveshaay. The latest infusion is expected to accelerate the company’s expansion efforts and strengthen its technology capabilities.

With this round, Kimbal’s total funding has reached $27 million. The company had previously raised $5 million in 2024 in a funding round led by Niveshaay. The continued backing from existing investors reflects sustained confidence in the startup’s business model and growth trajectory.

Focus on Technology and Manufacturing Expansion

Kimbal plans to deploy the newly raised capital towards advancing its product offerings across multiple domains, including power quality, energy management, and battery storage. The company also intends to reinforce its Advanced Metering Infrastructure, commonly known as AMI, which remains its core business vertical.

In addition to product innovation, the startup will invest in strengthening its manufacturing capabilities. A portion of the funds has been earmarked for international expansion as the company looks to scale its operations beyond domestic markets.

Building a Strong Smart Metering Ecosystem

Founded in 2011 by Ayush Sinhal, the Delhi-based company focuses on providing smart metering and smart grid solutions to power distribution companies. Its AMI platform has already deployed more than 1 crore endpoints, indicating significant adoption across utility networks.

Kimbal develops ‘Made-in-India’ smart meters designed for residential, commercial, and industrial applications. These devices are supported by communication systems that enable real-time electricity monitoring, helping utilities identify inefficiencies and reduce transmission losses.

Beyond hardware, the company offers a range of energy management solutions. These include power harmonics analyzers, RF mesh-based communication technologies, and smart grid automation systems that enhance overall grid performance.

Integrated Platforms Driving Efficiency

A key component of Kimbal’s offering is its proprietary technology ecosystem. Its RF network platform, Vayu, provides wide-area connectivity, while its cloud-based system, Vaani, processes and manages millions of data points generated by smart meters.

The company is also developing Kimbal Edge Intelligence, or KEI, a platform aimed at processing data closer to the power grid. This approach is expected to improve response times and operational efficiency by reducing reliance on centralized data systems.

Kimbal’s broader portfolio spans RF connectivity, cloud platforms, edge computing, power quality solutions, and battery storage systems. It also offers software tools for meter data management, workforce coordination, and energy analytics, enabling utilities to streamline operations and improve decision-making.

Global Presence and Diverse Client Base

Kimbal operates through teams based in multiple locations, including Delhi, Bengaluru, Singapore, South Korea, and Australia. Its solutions cater to a wide range of stakeholders, including utilities, Advanced Metering Infrastructure service providers, and large industrial and commercial users.

The company’s growing international footprint aligns with its strategy to tap into global demand for efficient and digitally enabled energy systems.

Rising Competition in Smart Grid Segment

Kimbal operates in a competitive landscape alongside players such as Husk Power Systems, Gram Power, Genus, Probus, and Kalki Communication Technologies. These companies are also working to modernise electricity distribution through advanced technologies.

Growing Demand for Modern Power Infrastructure

The funding comes at a time when the need to modernise power grids is increasing rapidly. The integration of renewable energy sources, coupled with rising electricity demand from data centres and electric vehicles, is placing additional pressure on existing infrastructure.

In India, the transition towards smarter energy systems is being supported by government initiatives such as the National Smart Grid Mission and the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme. These programmes aim to improve efficiency, reduce losses, and enhance the reliability of power distribution networks.

The country’s smart grid market is projected to reach $12.8 billion by 2035, growing at a compound annual growth rate of 14.45 percent. This expanding market presents significant opportunities for companies like Kimbal as utilities increasingly adopt digital solutions to manage complex energy systems.

With fresh capital and a focus on technology-driven innovation, Kimbal Technologies is positioning itself to play a larger role in the evolving global energy landscape.
