Global leader in video communications, Zoom, today announced the launch of its Zoom Phone service in India, starting with natively issued phone number support within the Maharashtra Telecom Circle, with key support coming from the city of Pune. Subsequently, Zoom Phone will be available in other major markets across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and in cities including Mumbai and Delhi, going into ever-deepening penetration across India.
This launch comes on the back of the acquisition in April 2023 by Zoom India of a Unified License with Access—All/PAN India and a Long Distance from the DoT. The company has focused thereafter on building dedicated domestic infrastructure to support its service fully in line with local regulatory requirements.
“We understand the need and are committed to building this local interconnection infrastructure to meet the regulatory mandate for the Unified Telecom license, thereby ensuring the effectiveness of Zoom’s cloud PBX service in India,” Velchamy Sankarlingam, President of Product and Engineering at Zoom, said.
Sankarlingam noted that Zoom Phone has now onboarded five customers with over 100,000 seats in the first quarter of FY25. “Our newest product speaks to our heritage in delivering seamless cloud services on a global scale, fortified by local investments to ensure compliance and service excellence in every market, including India,” he added.
The newly added licensed cloud private branch exchange (PBX) service will offer local telephony options and will be available as an add-on for existing paying customers of Zoom. AI Companion features to boost productivity in calls by providing post-call summaries, task extraction from voicemails, and voicemail prioritisation, prioritising urgent messages.
Sameer Raje, General Manager and Head of India and the SAARC region, said, “The launch of Zoom Phone is a milestone in our efforts for India, demonstrating our commitment to delivering a robust collaboration platform that addresses real business needs while promoting infinite human connection.”
