Ben Affleck has revealed why he and former wife Jennifer Garner decided against appearing together in his new Netflix thriller Animals, while also sharing an unusual social media experience in which Instagram allegedly banned him twice for impersonating himself.
The 54-year-old actor and director discussed both subjects in recent interviews ahead of the film’s scheduled October 9, 2026, release. His comments shed light on how his personal relationships influence professional decisions and why he prefers to maintain a low profile on social media despite his Hollywood career.
Affleck also spoke about his friendship with Garner, their potential future collaboration and the different approaches his former wives, Garner and Jennifer Lopez, have taken to building an online presence.
Why Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner Won’t Reunite in ‘Animals’
Affleck initially considered casting Garner and longtime collaborator Matt Damon in Animals, a political thriller about a Los Angeles mayoral candidate whose family becomes caught in a kidnapping crisis.
However, Damon’s commitment to Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey prompted a change in plans, with Affleck eventually taking over the leading role.
The filmmaker then reconsidered the possibility of casting Garner as his character’s wife, concerned that their real-life history could influence how audiences viewed the fictional relationship.
Speaking to GQ, Affleck recalled discussing the decision with Garner.
“At that point, I talked to Jen and she was like, ‘Yeah, we can’t…’,” he said.
“Speaking of the headwinds and audience perception, history has shown that’s a bad idea because the audience brings all this stuff to it in a negative way.”
Affleck ultimately chose Kerry Washington for the role of Abigail, opposite his character, Mark Kimball.
Although Garner will not appear in the film, Affleck stressed that he remains interested in working with her.
“Though I would love to work with Jennifer Garner, she’s brilliant,” he told GQ.
In a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly, he described Garner as a close friend and expressed gratitude for their relationship.
“I would love to work with her, frankly. She’s fabulous, and we’re really good friends, and I’m profoundly grateful to her, and we have a great thing,” Affleck said.
He added that he would welcome a future collaboration, provided their personal history did not distract audiences from the story.
Ben Affleck Says Instagram Banned Him Twice for Impersonating Himself
Beyond the casting discussion, Affleck shared an unexpected account of his limited experience with Instagram.
During an interview with Variety published on October 7, the actor claimed the platform had suspended his private account on two occasions because it believed he was impersonating himself.
“I got banned from Instagram twice for impersonating myself,” he said.
Affleck explained that the account had only six followers, including his children and some of their friends.
Unlike celebrities who use Instagram to promote projects, interact with fans or develop commercial partnerships, Affleck said he primarily wanted access to the platform to follow his children’s online activity.
What Ben Affleck Said About Jennifer Garner and Jennifer Lopez on Social Media
Affleck also discussed how his reluctance to cultivate an online following differs from the approach taken by his former wives, Jennifer Garner and Jennifer Lopez.
Both actresses have established public social media presences, while Affleck has largely avoided creating a comparable online identity.
Acknowledging the work involved in developing and maintaining an audience, he told Variety, “You work to develop that.”
He then questioned what he would even share with followers.
“What am I going to do, unbox something?” he joked.
Although Affleck does not actively cultivate a public Instagram presence, he remains a familiar figure in internet culture.
His appearances in Dunkin’ advertising campaigns and widely circulated photographs have contributed to an online image that often centres on his seemingly exhausted or frustrated expressions.
Affleck said his daughter had described this persona as “the beleaguered man”.
Rather than objecting to such portrayals, he suggested that understanding the humour behind them was important.
“You have to have a sense of humor and be in on the joke with people,” he said.
Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner’s Relationship After Divorce
Affleck and Garner married in 2005 before announcing their separation in 2015. Their divorce was finalised in 2018.
The former couple share three children, Violet, Fin and Samuel, and have maintained a relationship centred on their family.
Their professional association also goes back more than two decades.
Both appeared in the 2001 film Pearl Harbor before working together on the 2003 superhero movie Daredevil, in which Affleck portrayed Matt Murdock and Garner played Elektra Natchios.
Their history makes the prospect of another on-screen collaboration noteworthy, particularly as Affleck has repeatedly expressed admiration for Garner’s acting abilities.
However, his recent comments suggest that any reunion would need to involve a project where their previous marriage would not overshadow the characters.
Affleck’s personal life has also attracted attention following his divorce from Jennifer Lopez, which was finalised in 2025.
The actor has increasingly discussed the importance of family while promoting his latest film, including reflections on his parents’ deaths and the need to prioritise time with his children.
When Will Ben Affleck’s ‘Animals’ Release on Netflix?
Animals is scheduled for release on Netflix and in selected cinemas on October 9, 2026.
Directed and co-written by Affleck, the film follows Los Angeles mayoral candidate Mark Kimball and his wife Abigail as they attempt to rescue their kidnapped son.
As the couple struggles to secure the ransom, secrets within their marriage emerge, adding personal consequences to the unfolding crisis.
The film stars Affleck opposite Kerry Washington after the original casting plans involving Damon and Garner changed.
While a reunion between Affleck and Garner remains a possibility for another project, neither has announced a specific film that would bring them back together.
