British music producer and musician William Orbit, best known for helping shape Madonna’s acclaimed 1998 album Ray of Light, has died at the age of 69. Orbit, who also worked with artists including Blur, All Saints, U2, Britney Spears, Pink, Robbie Williams and Ricky Martin, died at his home on July 23, 2026.
His death was confirmed in a statement shared on social media by his family and friends on August 7. The statement said they were deeply saddened by his passing and that he would be greatly missed by those whose lives he touched through his music, friendship and kindness. A cause of death was not disclosed.
The Madonna Collaboration That Defined His Career
Orbit’s most celebrated work came through his collaboration with Madonna on Ray of Light. Released in 1998, the album marked a major shift in the singer’s sound, incorporating electronic influences into her pop music.
Orbit co-produced much of the record and played a central role in developing its electronic production. Songs associated with his work on the project include the title track, “Frozen” and “The Power of Good-Bye.”
The album became a major success at the Grammy Awards. Orbit received two Grammy wins for his work on Ray of Light, including Best Pop Vocal Album and Best Dance Recording for the title track. He later won another Grammy for “Beautiful Stranger,” Madonna’s song from the 1999 film Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me.
A Career Spanning Pop, Rock and Electronic Music
Orbit’s work extended well beyond Madonna. He collaborated with a wide range of artists during a career that crossed pop, rock and electronic music.
His credits included work with British girl group All Saints on songs such as “Pure Shores” and “Black Coffee.” He also worked with Blur, U2, Pink, Ricky Martin and other prominent artists.
Orbit later collaborated with Britney Spears and will.i.am on Spears’ 2013 album Britney Jean, contributing to the production of the song “Alien.” His ability to work across different musical styles made him a sought-after producer and collaborator.
According to the Recording Academy, Orbit received seven Grammy nominations during his career and won three awards.
He Returned to Work With Madonna Over the Years
Orbit and Madonna continued their professional relationship after the success of Ray of Light. He contributed to Madonna’s 2000 album Music and later reunited with the singer for her 2012 album MDNA.
In March 2026, Orbit revealed that he and Madonna had not spoken directly for many years. Despite the long period without communication, he said he had no hard feelings toward the singer and continued to hold her in high regard.
His relationship with Madonna remained one of the defining chapters of his career, with Ray of Light standing as the project most closely associated with his contribution to mainstream pop.
‘The Painter’ Marked His Final Album
Orbit continued making music throughout his later years. His final studio album, The Painter, was released in 2022, marking his return to new music after an extended break.
