Anthropic is sharpening its India play with a clear focus on startups and digital-first companies. The AI research company has appointed Sangeeta Bavi as Head of Digital Natives, Startups & Growth for India, a role that puts her at the centre of Claude’s expansion among Indian startups and digital native businesses.

The move comes at a time when India has already become Anthropic’s second-largest market for Claude, accounting for around 7.2% of global usage. For a company building its India presence, the appointment signals a more focused push towards founders, fast-growing technology companies and enterprise adoption.

Bavi brings with her deep experience across India’s startup ecosystem. She earlier served as Chief Operating Officer at YourStory Media, where she led operational strategy and revenue diversification initiatives. Before that, she worked as Director of Startup Business at Microsoft, where she built the company’s startup business in India from scratch.

For Anthropic, that mix of founder-network experience, operating discipline and big-tech startup strategy could prove valuable as it tries to grow Claude’s relevance in a market where startups are quickly experimenting with AI tools across product, engineering, customer support, research and business workflows.

In a LinkedIn post announcing the move, Bavi described the role as personally meaningful and spoke about her long association with founders.

“Startups have always held a special place in my heart,” she wrote. “Their ambition, resilience, and belief they can change the world have taught me more than any other form of learning. That’s why Anthropic as Head of Digital Natives, Startups & Growth, India feels deeply meaningful.”

A Startup-Focused Bet in a Fast-Growing Market

Anthropic’s India strategy is no longer just about product availability. The company is now putting leadership in place for specific parts of the market, especially startups, digital native firms and enterprise users.

Bavi’s appointment fits into that larger buildout. Anthropic is also preparing to open its first India office in Bengaluru. The office is expected to act as the company’s primary base for building local teams and scaling enterprise adoption in the country.

The choice of Bengaluru is significant in the Indian startup context. The city sits at the heart of India’s technology and startup activity, making it a natural location for a company looking to work closely with founders, product teams and enterprise customers.

For Indian startups, the appointment could mean more direct engagement with Anthropic’s local team, especially around Claude adoption. The company’s focus on “Digital Natives, Startups & Growth” suggests a market approach that goes beyond large enterprises and includes younger companies building AI into their own products and operations.

Anthropic Builds Its India Leadership Bench

Bavi’s appointment is part of a wider leadership ramp-up by Anthropic in India.

Earlier, the company appointed Irina Ghose, former Managing Director of Microsoft India, to lead its India operations ahead of the Bengaluru office launch. In April, Anthropic also appointed Amlan Mohanty, a former Google policy lead, as Head of India Policy and External Affairs.

Together, these appointments show how Anthropic is building a local structure across operations, policy, external affairs and startup growth. For a company expanding in India’s AI market, these are not symbolic roles. They point to a more deliberate attempt to create on-ground capacity, manage stakeholder relationships and grow adoption in a highly competitive technology environment.

India’s startup ecosystem is becoming an important battleground for AI platforms. Startups are often early adopters of new technology, but they also need strong local support, pricing clarity, developer engagement and use-case-led education before deep adoption happens.

That is where Bavi’s background may matter. Her work at YourStory gave her exposure to founder narratives, startup growth journeys and ecosystem-level engagement. Her Microsoft role added direct experience in building startup-focused business operations for a global technology company in India.

For Anthropic, the challenge will be to convert Claude’s early usage in India into deeper, stickier adoption among startups and digital native firms. The company’s 7.2% global usage share from India already gives it a base. The next step is building stronger relationships with the companies and founders who can make Claude part of their everyday business and product workflows.

Bavi’s appointment, therefore, is not just another senior hire. It is a signal that Anthropic sees India’s startup market as a serious growth engine for Claude.
