At the height of India’s early-1990s stock market boom, Harshad Mehta‘s personal fortune was pegged at ₹ 3,542 crore, which made him one of the richest market operators the country had ever seen. In dollar terms, the figure of ₹ 3,542 crore was well over $480 million, an amount seen for the first time by a single broker in those days.

The number became emblematic of the bull run itself, rapid, aggressive, and fuelled by rising equity prices. But unlike traditional industrial wealth, Mehta’s net worth was deeply intertwined with market sentiment and financial instruments, making it both spectacular in scale and fragile in structure.

Harshad Mehta: When wealth turned tangible?

Mehta’s fortune was not confined to trading accounts. His wealth was visibly anchored in high-value real estate, most notably a lavish residence in Mumbai’s Worli area.

His home at Madhuli Cooperative Housing Society was spread across eight interconnected apartments over two floors, covering approximately 15,000 square feet.

The residence included features rarely seen in private homes at the time, a swimming pool, a mini-theatre, a billiards room and a private putting green. The sheer scale of the property reinforced Mehta’s public image as the face of the booming stock market.

Beyond Worli, Mehta also owned two sea-facing apartments in Juhu, each measuring about 1,150 square feet, and a full-floor commercial office at Maker Chambers V in Nariman Point, one of Mumbai’s most expensive business districts.

Together, these properties formed a significant part of the asset base that underpinned his estimated ₹3,542-crore net worth.

From peak valuation to frozen assets

The exposure of the securities scam marked a sharp break in Mehta’s financial trajectory. Authorities moved swiftly to seize assets linked to him, including residential and commercial properties, bank accounts, luxury vehicles and valuables.

What followed was not an immediate liquidation of wealth, but a prolonged legal and administrative process. A Supreme Court-appointed custodian took charge of the assets, tasked with selling them to recover dues owed to banks and tax authorities.

One of the most critical moments occurred in 2009 when an auction took place for eight out of nine flats at the Madhuli property. The objective of this step was to resolve existing debts such as tax dues. A bid of ₹32.6 crore was proffered for the Worli flats, although the transaction did not go to a conclusive ending since an objection from the Mehta family took this matter to a court of law.

Why the numbers never added up again?

Although Mehta’s peak net worth is enormous, recoveries remained small. Court cases, ownership disputes, and an attached stigma prevented sales. Even high-end properties in prime Mumbai were not valued at their market price.

Cumulative recoveries from asset auctions were estimated at ₹70-80 crore, a fraction of the liabilities that accumulated over time. Tax claims alone, including compounded interest, were stated to run into ₹20,000 crore, dwarfing the value eventually realised from seized assets.

Around 3 decades later, Harshad Mehta’s ₹3,542 cr net worth remains a reference point, not as a measure of enduring wealth. It became locked in courtrooms, auction notices and unresolved claims, leaving the number frozen in history rather than converted into recoverable value.
