Air New Zealand and Air India Ink Codeshare Deal, Eye Direct Flights by 2028

In a strategic move to enhance connectivity between India and New Zealand, Air New Zealand and Air India have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), announcing a new codeshare partnership and exploring the possibility of direct flights between the two countries.

The MoU was signed in Mumbai in the presence of New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and other dignitaries, marking a significant step in strengthening air travel and trade relations.

New Codeshare Routes

The codeshare agreement will provide seamless connectivity across 16 routes, allowing passengers from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai to fly with Air India to Sydney, Melbourne, or Singapore, and then connect onto Air New Zealand-operated flights to Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, and Queenstown.

Exploring a Direct Flight by 2028

A key highlight of the MoU is the commitment to explore a direct service between India and New Zealand by 2028, pending aircraft availability and regulatory approvals.

Air New Zealand CEO Greg Foran emphasised the growing significance of the Indian market, stating, “India represents a key growth opportunity for us. This codeshare is just the beginning, as we assess the viability of a direct route to serve travelers better and strengthen ties between our nations.”

Air India CEO Campbell Wilson echoed this sentiment, highlighting the airline’s commitment to expanding its global footprint through partnerships like this. He remarked that the collaboration would simplify journeys and help build demand for a future non-stop flight between India and New Zealand.

Tourism and Trade Implications

The agreement aligns with Tourism New Zealand’s strategy to attract Indian travelers, given that 18 million Indians in key metros are considering a trip to New Zealand.

In 2024, visitor arrivals from India grew by 23% compared to pre-pandemic levels, underlining the country’s potential as a lucrative tourism market.
