Saffron Farming: How a Nagpur Couple Built a Rs 50 Lakh Business

Nagpur couple Akshay Holey and Divya Lohakare Holey have converted a 400-square-foot small room into a successful saffron farm business. They have been using aeroponic technology in a novel approach and have earned a substantial annual income of Rs 50 lakh despite Nagpur’s extremely hot weather.

A Vision to Bring Saffron to Maharashtra

The journey began in 2020 when Akshay, a BBA graduate, and Divya, a baker, envisioned a saffron cultivation business. They noticed a gap in the Indian market, where demand for saffron is significantly higher than local production. Determined to bridge this gap, the couple traveled to Kashmir, where they spent two and a half months learning the nuances of saffron farming from local farmers.

Innovating with Aeroponics

Rather than soil-based farming, the couple went for aeroponic technology to develop an artificial cool and foggy atmosphere replicating Kashmir’s climate. It not only conserves water but also lowers the maintenance aspect as compared to regular farming.

They started with only 100 saffron seeds, and their results were humble at first. Not discouraged by the setbacks, they kept on perfecting their method, which eventually led to a breakthrough that they could now grow high-quality saffron in the limited space.

A Booming Enterprise

The couple’s saffron business now earns an impressive Rs 50 lakh annually. Their journey serves as a powerful reminder that innovative thinking and perseverance can overcome geographical and climatic challenges. Akshay and Divya plan to further expand their business while promoting sustainable and innovative farming practices in India.

Their story from Nagpur highlights how passion and determination can turn an unconventional idea into a successful venture, inspiring aspiring agripreneurs to take on challenges and succeed.
