GreenJoules, a Pune-based startup, is changing the renewable energy landscape in India by converting agricultural and agro-industrial waste into next-generation biofuels. Founded in 2018 by Viraraghavan Sankaran, the company’s mission is clear: “Remodel waste to power the future”.
Innovative Biofuel Solutions
GreenJoules specializes in producing “drop-in” biofuels-renewable alternatives that can directly replace fossil fuels like diesel and LPG without engine modifications. Their flagship product, Abhilasha Liquid Fuel, has been validated by IIT Chennai for its performance parity with conventional diesel and meets stringent BIS VI and Euro VI standards, boasting ultra-low sulfur content and significantly reducing harmful emissions.
What sets GreenJoules apart is that they only use non-food, renewable waste-primarily agricultural residues-sidestepping the food-versus-fuel debate and supporting a true circular economy.
Their process generates minimal waste, with all by-products repurposed for various industrial applications, including biochar for fertilizers and even materials for silica and activated carbon.
Sustainability and Impact
GreenJoules’ biorefinery in Chakan, near Pune, boasts of eco-responsibility.
The company claims its fuel is carbon neutral, with a life-cycle greenhouse gas emission reduction of up to 90% compared to traditional diesel. By providing a sustainable outlet for agro-waste, GreenJoules also addresses the pressing issue of crop residue burning, offering farmers a viable alternative and contributing to cleaner air.
Growth and Vision
With recent funding of $4.5 million from Blue Ashva Capital, GreenJoules is poised for expansion. The company is also developing new products, such as Abhilasha Gaseous Fuel, to further diversify its clean energy offerings.
