The college football player died five days after suffering an injury during a game against Ouachita Baptist. His university has not disclosed the nature of the injury or the cause of death. Southern Nazarene University football player Tyler Ulrich has died at the age of 21, five days after suffering a serious injury during a college football game in Oklahoma.

Ulrich, a sophomore safety from Azle, Texas, was injured on Saturday, October 10, during Southern Nazarene’s 49-14 defeat to Ouachita Baptist. The game was delayed for nearly an hour as medical personnel treated him on the field before he was taken to a hospital.

The university confirmed his death on Thursday, October 15. It described the incident as a “traumatic injury” but did not reveal what caused it or disclose the official cause of death.

Ulrich died in hospital with his family, teammates and close friends by his side.

Southern Nazarene Mourns Tyler Ulrich

The news has deeply affected Southern Nazarene University, a Division II institution based in Bethany, Oklahoma.

University President Keith Newman said Ulrich spent his final moments “surrounded by the love, prayers, and presence of his family, teammates and dear friends.”

The university also paid tribute to the young player in a statement shared through its athletics account on X.

“This loss is deeply felt across our campus. Our hearts are with his family, friends, teammates, and everyone who knew him,” the statement said.

The university had organised a campuswide prayer chapel on Tuesday, October 13, as Ulrich remained hospitalised.

Following his death, Southern Nazarene cancelled its scheduled Saturday game against Southwestern Oklahoma State.

Who Was Tyler Ulrich? A Look at His Football Career

Beyond the tragedy, Ulrich was building a promising college football career.

The 21-year-old was in his third season with Southern Nazarene and had made 16 starts across 20 appearances.

He had already started six games during the 2026 season and recorded 36 tackles, the third-highest total on the team.

Originally from Azle, Texas, Ulrich had also distinguished himself as a high school athlete. He competed in powerlifting and earned football all-district and academic all-state honours.

He was studying finance at Southern Nazarene. His university biography listed water sports, working out and attending church among his interests.

Coach Remembers Ulrich’s Quiet Strength

Southern Nazarene head coach Dustin Hada remembered Ulrich for his character as much as his contribution on the field.

“Man of God, ultimate example of quiet strength, loyal, worker, joyous. That’s who Tyler was!!” Hada wrote on X.

His father’s tribute was equally moving.

In a Facebook post announcing his son’s death, Ulrich’s father thanked everyone who had supported the family through the difficult days following the injury.

“Our family is truly blessed to receive all the love and prayers for our young Tyler and we are ever grateful,” he wrote.

He said his son had died at 11:13 a.m. and described a young man who approached life with faith, enthusiasm and a fierce love for football.

“Tyler led a life full of faith, passion and being a BEAST on the football field!!! He will be remembered always,” his father wrote.

What Happened to Tyler Ulrich on the Field?

Ulrich sustained the injury during Southern Nazarene’s October 10 game against Ouachita Baptist.

Medical staff attended to him on the field, and the game was delayed for almost an hour before he was transported to hospital.

For Southern Nazarene, the loss extends beyond the absence of a starting safety. Ulrich was a student, teammate and friend whose death has left a grieving family and university community.

At just 21, he leaves behind the memory of a young athlete whose coaches and loved ones spoke of his faith, dedication and strength of character.
