Simple Energy has raised Rs 250 crore in a fresh debt-and-equity funding round, giving the electric two-wheeler startup fresh capital to expand production, widen its retail reach and prepare for a planned public listing in the second half of FY28.

The round was led by the family office of Arokiaswamy Velumani, with participation from Simple Energy’s founders. The debt portion of the round stood at Rs 123 crore, raised from HDFC Bank, Capitar Ventures and other NBFCs.

For Simple Energy, the timing of the fundraise matters. The company is no longer speaking only about product ambition. It is now talking about scale, store expansion, revenue growth and IPO readiness. That makes this round more than a capital announcement. It is a signal that the startup wants to move from being a niche EV maker to a more visible player in India’s electric two-wheeler market.

Founded in August 2019 by Suhas Rajkumar and Shreshth Mishra, Simple Energy designs and manufactures high-performance electric two-wheelers. Its flagship electric scooter offers a claimed range of up to 248 km on a single charge, a top speed of 105 kmph and large boot storage.

The company plans to use the fresh capital to scale production capacity, expand its distribution network and support product development. Simple Energy currently sells around 2,000 scooters a month and is working to increase its manufacturing capacity from 3,000 scooters a month to 10,000 scooters a month. It also plans to expand its retail network from nearly 80 stores to 200 to 250 outlets by next March.

The IPO plan is the bigger marker. Simple Energy is preparing for a listing in the second half of FY28 and aims to raise around Rs 3,000 crore, or about $350 million, to fund market expansion, research and development, and a new manufacturing facility.

The company has raised capital in earlier rounds too. It secured $21 million in a pre-Series A round in November 2021, led by investors Manish Bharti and Raghunath Subram. It later raised $20 million in a bridge round in February 2023 and another $20 million in a Series A round.

Simple Energy’s operating revenue is reported to be around Rs 150 to 160 crore in FY26, nearly four times the previous fiscal year. That growth gives the company a stronger base as it enters a more demanding phase, where investors will look beyond product claims and track execution, monthly sales, service experience, production discipline and store-level performance.

The road to an IPO will depend on how well Simple Energy converts this funding into repeatable scale. EV customers are increasingly weighing range, reliability, after-sales support and brand trust before making a purchase. For a company aiming to expand rapidly, manufacturing capacity and retail presence will have to grow together.

The fresh Rs 250 crore round gives Simple Energy breathing room. The next test will be whether it can turn that capital into a larger physical footprint, stronger monthly volumes and a public-market story that can stand up to scrutiny by FY28.
