Elon Musk has promised to give every child in America one of his SpaceX shares in 2027, making an unexpected commitment that could put a small piece of his space company into the hands of young Americans.
The SpaceX CEO announced the plan on X, writing, “Next year, I will give one of my SpaceX shares to every kid in America.” He followed it with another statement: “This will be the first of many.”
Anthropic’s 5% Share Pledge Sets the Stage
Musk’s announcement came shortly after artificial intelligence company Anthropic revealed plans to dedicate 5% of its shares to a fund supporting initiatives aimed at the public good.
The company, which develops the Claude AI chatbot, intends to direct some of that funding towards addressing the effects of artificial intelligence on employment.
Anthropic’s decision comes amid growing concerns about the wider consequences of AI, including its potential impact on jobs and society.
The company has repeatedly warned about the risks associated with increasingly powerful AI systems.
Following Anthropic’s announcement on Sunday, Musk responded to the company’s X account with a different suggestion: shares should go “directly to the public.”
His subsequent SpaceX pledge appeared to follow that approach, shifting the focus from a company-managed public benefit fund to direct ownership by individuals.
How Much Could One SpaceX Share Be Worth?
Although Musk has pledged one share per child, the financial value of that promise remains unclear.
He has not disclosed the value of the shares intended for distribution or explained what receiving a share would mean for individual beneficiaries.
SpaceX Accounts for Most of Musk’s Fortune
The proposed giveaway involves the company that represents the largest portion of Musk’s personal wealth.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index figures cited in the October 19 report, Musk’s net worth exceeds $900 billion, with his SpaceX holdings accounting for approximately $700 billion.
His remaining wealth is associated with companies including Tesla, Neuralink and The Boring Company.
That makes the announcement particularly notable. Rather than pledging a conventional cash donation, Musk is proposing to distribute shares from his most valuable business holding.
Will Musk Follow Through on the 2027 Promise?
Musk has previously announced ambitious ideas that were never implemented, while some of his public statements have later been described as jokes.
That history makes the absence of a detailed plan an important part of the latest announcement.
He has nevertheless given the proposal additional visibility by pinning the SpaceX share pledge to the top of his X profile.
Whether that public commitment develops into an actual share distribution remains to be seen.
For American children, the promise is unusual: a potential ownership stake in SpaceX without having to purchase shares themselves. But the announcement offers no clear timeline beyond 2027 and no explanation of how the transfer would take place.
The next significant development will be whether Musk provides a concrete plan covering eligibility, share allocation and distribution.
