The Government of India has tightened regulations for dealing with erroneous deductions from FASTag accounts, marking a major step towards increased equity and transparency in the toll collection system. According to the regulations, consumers charged the incorrect tolls must receive their reimbursements immediately.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) came down strongly on such discrepancies by charging a fine of ₹1 lakh per infringement on toll operators who were liable for erroneous deductions. This initiative, it is reported, has brought such cases down by 70%, as stated by the Indian Highways Management Company Limited (IHMCL).
How to Report Wrongful Deductions:
Users who experience incorrect deductions can file a complaint through multiple channels:
- Helpline: Dial 1033 for assistance.
- Email: Send a detailed complaint to falsededuction@ihmcl.com.
- Essential Details Required:
- Transaction ID
- Date and time of deduction
- Vehicle number
- Supporting documents
Upon receiving a complaint, IHMCL verifies the claim and promptly processes the refund if the deduction is wrongful.
Common Causes for Wrongful Deductions:
- Incorrect Vehicle Identification: Errors in vehicle identification can result in incorrect charges.
- Double Deduction: Duplicating the charges for one trip.
- Wrong Toll Charges: Overcharging above the toll rate.
- Technical Mistakes: System breakdowns at toll stations resulting in wrongful deductions.
Impact of the New Regulations:
The tighter norms help regain users’ confidence in the FASTag system through quick redressal of grievances. The fines on defaulting toll operators act as a deterrent, making them keep toll collections accurate.
As FASTag transactions continue to rise, these regulations are expected to streamline operations and minimize grievances, making highway travel more user-friendly and transparent.
