Apple has confirmed an event for Wednesday, September 9 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time, where the company is widely expected to introduce the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, alongside its long-rumored first foldable iPhone and other products.
While Apple has not announced when iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders will open or when the phones will reach stores, the calendar points to Friday, September 18 as the most likely release date for the Pro models. The bigger question is what Apple does with pre-orders.
September 11 complicates Apple’s usual iPhone schedule
Apple typically begins pre-orders on the first Friday following its September iPhone event. Following that pattern in 2026 would put the start of iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders on Friday, September 11.
This year, however, September 11 marks the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, creating a scheduling consideration that Apple has encountered before.
There is a notable precedent from 2015.
Apple held its iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus event on Wednesday, September 9 that year. Rather than opening pre-orders on Friday, September 11, the company began taking orders on Saturday, September 12 at 12:01 a.m. Pacific Time.
That history does not confirm that Apple will make the same decision in 2026, but it makes this year’s pre-order date less predictable than a typical iPhone launch.
The September 18 release date, meanwhile, remains the most likely scenario for the iPhone 18 Pro lineup based on the expected launch sequence.
Foldable iPhone may follow a different timetable
Apple’s expected foldable iPhone could make the September event more significant, but buyers interested in the new form factor may have to wait longer than iPhone 18 Pro customers.
Apple supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes pre-orders for the foldable model may begin after those for the iPhone 18 Pro series. Manufacturing challenges are said to have constrained early production, which could push the foldable device’s commercial launch beyond the initial September rollout.
The device has been rumored to carry the iPhone Ultra name, although that branding has not been confirmed by Apple.
Kuo believes the foldable iPhone may not become available for pre-order until the fourth quarter of 2026.
Apple has previously separated the sales dates of iPhones announced at the same event. In 2017, the company introduced the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and iPhone X together on September 12. Pre-orders for the iPhone 8 models opened only three days later, while customers had to wait until October 27, around six weeks later, to pre-order the iPhone X.
That precedent leaves room for Apple to unveil its foldable iPhone alongside the iPhone 18 Pro while giving the two product lines very different retail schedules.
What is confirmed and what remains uncertain
For now, September 9 is the confirmed date on Apple’s calendar. The iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and foldable iPhone remain expected announcements rather than products formally confirmed for the event in the information currently available.
Likewise, neither the iPhone 18 Pro pre-order date nor the September 18 release date has been officially announced.
That distinction matters this year because Apple’s traditional launch pattern collides with a date the company has treated differently in the past. The 2015 example gives the 2026 launch an unusual historical parallel: Apple could once again have a September 9 iPhone event without following it with Friday pre-orders two days later.
With the event now scheduled, the next major pieces of the iPhone 18 Pro launch calendar will be Apple’s official pre-order and availability dates.
