AM/NS India, a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Japan’s Nippon Steel, will soon launch a significant steel project in Andhra Pradesh, investing Rs 1.4 lakh crore. This facility, with a planned 17.8 million tonne capacity, will rank among India’s largest new steel projects. Based in Anakapalli district, it aims to boost India’s steel output and create jobs.
Phase one of the AM/NS steel project in Andhra Pradesh
In the first phase, AM/NS India will invest Rs 80,000 crore to establish a 7.3 million metric tonne steel plant. The company has requested 2,600 acres of land near Nakkapalli, where 1,800 acres are already available. This strategic location allows AM/NS to begin work efficiently, with necessary resources close at hand.
Expansion plans for Andhra Pradesh steel production
For the second phase, AM/NS will invest an additional Rs 60,000 crore, with increasing capacity by 10.5 MMTPA. This phase requires another 2,000 acres of land, which the government is working to secure. The Nakkapalli site offers crucial benefits, including both ample land and access to port facilities. Additionally, AM/NS plans to build a captive jetty, allowing for the efficient import of raw materials at competitive prices. This move will enhance cost-effectiveness for the company.
Economic and environmental impact of the AM/NS steel project
The AM/NS steel plant will use sustainable green steel technologies, meeting high environmental standards. A value-added complex will also be part of the facility, supporting downstream industries. By producing high-grade flat steel products, AM/NS can reduce India’s reliance on imported steel and cater to sectors such as automotive manufacturing.
With construction set to begin in January 2025, this steel project will expand India’s steel production significantly. This new Andhra Pradesh plant, combined with AM/NS’s ongoing projects in Gujarat and Odisha, positions the company as a key player in India’s steel industry.
